Two Under 2

Anyone NOT like the Bugaboo Donkey

I went stroller shopping yesterday with my friend who is also expecting her second under 2.  She is due in a few months so she's in stroller shopping mode.  Smile I was pretty captivated by the Donkey and the City Select.  Just wondering if anyone has the Donkey and if so, what you think of it.  I won't be buying a stroller for a LONG time so there may be a lot more on the market, but of the ones I saw I seemed to like this one best.  I know it's expensive, but assuming cost wasn't a factor, I'm just looking for opinions from people who either own it or considered it.

Re: Anyone NOT like the Bugaboo Donkey

  • I am hardly ever on this board anymore, but I happened to just be on this morning.

I do NOT like the Bugaboo Donkey at all for 3 main reasons (my friend has it):

    1. it's a side by side. I like tandems - I find them more efficient and they take up less space than a side by side.

    2. It's marketed as going from a "single" to a "double", but that's not entirely true. It doesn't become a TRUE single stroller. It becomes a single stroller with a space on one side. You can leave the space alone or put in this basket attachment that they have. To me, that's so annoying.

    3. At $1600 it's a ripoff. The running joke is that they named it the Donkey because you have to be a jacka$$ to pay that price. You can get the City Select for 1/2 the money and I feel like it offers so much more.

  • I auctually used mine as a single the other day and the extra basket was super useful for putting the groceries when I took it on a walk to the shops near our house. I don't spend much time using it inside so the ability to push it through snow (which would be really hard with a tandem like the City select) is much more important to me than the width
  • Thanks for the info.  Not sure if I'd prefer a side by side or not, I'll have to try some out later in my pregnancy and decide which I prefer.  I can actually get mine for about $700 with the car seat adapter (friend bought one to use as a single but decided on another), so when all is said and done it wouldn't be much more than the City Select.  I guess that's why I wanted to know the true problems/issues people have with it, not whether people think it's a good deal at the $1600 price point (a price I'd probably never pay for a stroller, period).

I actually have the BOB for my son and LOVE it, but the Duallie looks huge to me.  That's part of the reason I'm thinking no on the Donkey...it's almost as wide.

  • FWIW - mine are only 17 months apart and we used our double stroller maybe 5 times total.

In the beginning we used our single and I wore the baby so I could have my hands free to deal with the toddler and run after him easily.

After that we lived in a sit and stand because I had a toddler who didn't want to sit and did well minding me such that he could be out of a stroller and walking around.

I know you mentioned waiting and I would highly encourage that.

See what your toddler's personality is in regards to strollers by the time you're close to delivering.

Then... consider buying used off Craigslist.  Do the math... buying almost ANY double stroller brand new is kinda  waste of cash when you consider that you'll likely only get 1-2 years of use out of it.

I re-sold the used double I got off Craigslist and made enough that my out of pocket cost for the double was around $30.  Good thing too since we barely used it!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

This is fantastic advice, thank you!
