Giving no-poo a chance

Hi, I randomly post here but lurk a lot! And I have been reading up on the posts about no-poo, and I decided to give it a try. I washed my hair yesterday with baking soda and ACV. But my hair still feels greasy--it was already that way since I had not washed it in almost a week, I typically wash twice a week, so my hair feels still dirty, greasy and limp. What's worse right on top my scalp looks so dry that it's even scaly like dandruff!

This what I did: I put about 2-3 give ot take Tbsp of baking soda in a peri bottle with boiled water, then for the rinse I added about 3oz of ACV in the same peri bottle. I used boiled water since I have very hard water. What should I do different? Or how long will it take for my hair to get used to it? Oh, and when should I wash again? TIA

  • Did you dilute the ACV?  I usually use about 2 tbsp ACV and a cup of water for my very dry hair.  For hair that tends towards being greasy I'd reduce the amount of ACV and try to concentrate it on the ends.

As for the dryness, did you really rinse the baking soda thoroughly?  I usually spend a solid 2 or 3 minutes rinsing since it doesn't come out as easily as regular shampoo or conditioner would.  You may want to try reducing the amount of baking soda you use, too - I usually just make a paste with about a tbsp and massage my scalp with it.  Even with greasy hair you probably don't need to use much through the length of the hair or the ends.

I wash my hair every third or fourth day and just rinse on off days.

  • How large is your peri bottle?  I only use a few teaspoons of baking soda or ACV and my containers are over 16 ounces.  It really isn't a lot.  Also, for the first week or so (even though I didn't wash it a ton before I started), my hair was just really greasy up top and really flyaway at the ends.  I just had to deal with it until it got better, which it did as my hair adjusted.  Now, when I shower, it looks just as clean as it did before, only now I have much more volume.

  • I've never had luck with ACV rinses, no matter how I dilute it.  It doesn't seem to work for my fine, thinnish hair, it always leaves it greasy feeling and lank.  I've heard some people have had luck with citric acid or even tea rinses after using BS as a wash..... GL I hope you find a routine that works for you!
