I agree with the PP, just do it and you will feel better about it. I have a nursing cover that I use, sometimes, when I NIP. If you don't have that, a blanket will do the trick. J actually gets too distracted by the nursing cover (it's very colorful) so I have been using an aden and anais blanket. I will now nurse anywhere! I've nursed in restaurants, stores, football games! No one pays any attention. I've never gotten any negative vibes ever!
To answer your question...I think J was like 6-8 weeks. It took me a while b/c I had a lot of pain in the beginning and it was impossible to nurse without proper support of the boppy, hand positioning, etc.
With DS1, I didn't NIP until he could latch on fairly quickly. He was about 10 weeks. With DS2, I was NIP when he was a few days old, but I was much more comfortable with breastfeeding in general at that point.
I agree that it takes a few sessions of NIP to get comfortable with it. The first time with DS1 was at the mall, and I found an empty hallway with a bench, so there wouldn't be a lot of people around. Maybe finding a few out-of-the way places to build up your courage? And also, in 3+ years of nursing, I've never had any ever give me a hard time about NIP.
I nursed in public fairly early on (5 weeks) while using a nursing cover, since it took some effort to get DS latched.
The thing that helped me get the courage to nurse without a cover was taking a mom + baby yoga class. I was able to practice being discreet, with the knowledge that if anyone saw anything it would be NBD. I'm glad that I did this because shortly thereafter, DS refused to nurse under the cover.
I think that you just need to do it and you will be fine. Think you are feeding the baby. don't be afarid. I never had a bad idea about breastfeeding- but with that said MANY many ppl don't like it or think its gross.
I had so many stares at the mall with my first- even with the cover - this was in the 90's of course when nursing wasn't done much
DD was a week old the first time I NIP. It was a little awkward (for both of us) at first but now it's no big deal. I'll whip out a boob (discretely) anytime, anywhere. I don't think of my boobs in any sort of sexual way anymore; they're just milk containers for my baby. I'm at the point where I could care less if someone sees a little bit of boobage although I'm sure other people might freak out... It's just a boob, get over it... lol.
