Birthing classes?

I feel like I am supposed to take birthing classes, but I wanted to see how many MoM's took them.

Over the weekend my cousin (who is due in Feb.) was talking about hers and mentioned a girl pregnant with twins due in May in her class. It seemed early to be there, but it got me thinking I should probably get going on them if I am going to do it.

Also, how important is it for husbands to attend? My H works full time and coaches high school b-ball until March, so he wouldn't be able to go during the week.

  • We took one for twin parents, it was good because there was a lot of twin specific info

    We're doing the same!

  • I'm going to be calling today to find out the availability of classes. Not sure about taking a birthing class since I'm most likely having a c/s.

  • We skipped the birthing classes all together. I read enough blogs, message boards, and books to know what to expect. Most people say those classes are much more beneficial for the husband. If yours can't attend and you've watched enough Baby Story and One Born Every Minute to know what happens, I'd skip it. Our hospital offered a multiples class, and we did go to that. Again, I learned much more here, but we did get one great nugget. The teacher told us that we'd both need to do everything. No parent can slack. I'm sure DH would have been hands-on and awesome anyway, but he took it very serious to learn and be involved in everything.

  • I talked to a friend who had just taken the birthing classes with her husband.  She said that it was really good for her DH and she was glad he went.  She said they focused on what all would happen (talked about both vaginal and c/s births) and what his responsibilities would be.  She said she felt like he was a little more prepared that way.  Our doctor said we should shoot for no later than 24 weeks for the classes since it's twins.

We will definitely be taking the childcare classes, but are taking the birthing class too.  Even with a scheduled c/s, you have a chance of going into labor before hand. I figure it can't hurt to take the class and be aware.

  • Thanks everyone.

I know a lot of places the birthing classes are more than just birthing, and deal with safety and baby care basics. I have to ask next appointment what mine would include.

Once I found out it was twins, I was even less compelled to draft a birthing plan and take classes on things like the Bradley method.
