Boys and your period

Ok... so... I got my first PP AF this week, and G walked in on me in the bathroom while I was putting a pad on. He asked what I was doing, and I drew a complete blank.

What have you told your preschooler about menstruation?

He is SUCH in the "why" phase right now. Everything is succeeded with a Why question, and I know I can't just briefly glance over it without him wanting more details.

I don't want to use the words "diaper" because I hope to start to potty training soon, and I don't want him to think that he can wear a diaper for ever. Which, right now, he would LOVE to do.

I'm worried about saying that I'm bleeding, because I don't want him to worry about me.

I know I should be smart enough to come up with something, but I'm drawing a complete blank.

What have you said/done?

Re: Boys and your period

  • I lock the door and say mommies needs privacy for a few minutes. I don't think he needs to see that or understand at this point.

  • I was thinking about this just this morning.  M walked in on me while I was going to the bathroom in all my postpartum glory and I wondered if he would ask but luckily he was distracted by the radio.  I think I'll just say it is what Mommy's wear.  M is generally pretty content by basic answers like that and won't push the issue.

  • I asked this question awhile back and got a lot of responses, not that I remember what everyone said of course. Personally I've got with total avoidance and started locking the door when I have to deal with it.  Both of my boys went through a phase where they pulled my pantiliners apart and stuck them all over the bathroom and the master bedroom and Andrew thought tampons were super toys, I'd the boys having contests to see who could get theirs to spin in a faster circle ::sigh:::.  They weren't any older than 3 and less than 2ish at that point so I just went with they are special mama things and not to be played with.  They never pushed for much more info and I never made a huge deal about playing with them ( like they could have 1 but not the entire darn box, lol).

At this stage I can't imagine an age appropriate response.  He's not really going to get that bleeding equals anything except hurt.

  • I just told him that when mommy isn't growing a baby she has some blood. It's not a boo-boo and that I don't have an ouchie. He was satisfied after asking 50 times If I had a boo-boo and if I was sure :)

  • I told E I had an ouchie on my heinie after Olive was born and she talked about my ouchie for months! It did not help that she went to several of my pp doctors appointments. At her 2 year check up she asked her pediatrician to check her heinie. Yeah, that was awkward.

jsugrin, this made me laugh so hard!

I'm not comfortable locking the door to be honest. While I enjoy my privacy, I can't afford it in the morning with our routine. It's a great day if I get to brush my teeth without holding S2 on one hip.

But while G dropped the subject then, I know it will come up again, hence me asking.

  • Both my kids have seen me change tampons or pads.  I just tell them its part of mommy being able to have kids and that when I don't have a baby, the layer that protects the baby come out.  Its partly blood, but not from a hurt, and its mixed with all the other baby protecting stuff.

We're all science like up in our house...

Obviously, this has been in parts.  At first- "what's that?" point at implement.   Oh, that's just something mommy has to wear sometimes... "what's that?" with period on it- oh, that's just part of mommy being able to have babies.  And that suffices for six months.  Then the "why's" start and it keeps getting added to...

  • Both my boys have seen it.  Aaron called it a mommy diaper and laughed, I laughed back and said "sort of, but no exactly." And that was that.  When they've seen blood in the toilet, I've non-nonchalantly with a shrug said it's not a boo boo, but it happens to women once a month and it's no big deal.  When Ryan pressed for more, I just said that's part of being a woman and he doesn't have to worry about it.  Given my line of work, my kids are pretty curious about where babies come from and how they're made, but we haven't connected those dots yet.

    I think I'll steal this.
