mo/di being closely monitored?

if you have mo/di how closely are you being monitored?

after our A/S we are being seen by specialists and moved to high risk, while i'm happy to be watched it seems like over kill, there is no sign that  of ttts (they measure the same, and fluid levels are the same)

i have fluid checks every 2 weeks, measurements every 4 weeks....

Re: mo/di being closely monitored?

  • I had the same monitoring as you are having, so I think thats the norm for mo-di.  They probaby want to check your cervix too to make sure you're not dialating at all.

  • It's good that they're being cautious. Things can change very quickly in any multiples situation, but particularly mo/di pregancies.

I was in pretty often, and it was a good thing in my situation. Hopefully things will continue to go smoothly for you. They just want to be careful.

  •  Looking back, I probably wasn't monitored close enough during a crucial time.  I had no u/s between 18-22 weeks.  TTTS at my 22 week MFM appointment.  It sounds like they are doing everything right.  TTTS is a fast moving disease and can occur at any time.

  • Be prepared for many, many appointments. I see my OB every week, my MfM for an u/s every other week, and starting this week I have twice a week NSTs (including the weeks that I have an u/s). My u/s last Friday was the best I've had in a while - girls are 4 lbs 1 oz each and my cervix is actually a little longer, yet on Monday my OB called and told me that I had to do the NST twice a week starting this week. I asked if that was really necessary, especially since I live an hour from my doctors, and she said yes. The appointments are definitely time consuming and inconvenient, but the frequent monitoring caught my cervix shortening drastically at 26 weeks. If I hadn't started bed rest then, who knows if they'd still be inside of me. I figure it's just the start of the many sacrifices we'll be making for our kids :)

    Good luck!

  • Prior to being put on hospital bedrest, I was being monitored by my team of peris every other week via u/s, BPPs every other week, growth scans every 4 (basically what you described). I also was being graduated to more frequent visits with my OB earlier than I otherwise would have. I didn't get much of that before being admitted to the hospital on bedrest at 27 weeks due to pre-eclampsia. In the hospital, I NSTs every day and BPPs twice a week.

I will say that the increased monitoring caught it when my pre-eclampsia worsened so I could be delivered for my and their safety. So while it seems like overkill now, when everything seems to be going well, you never know what will happen to you. I knew that hospital bedrest was a possibility. I knew the pre-e was a possibility. But until 25 weeks, everything looked perfect at all my visits. Just embrace it, even though it sucks. It's only for a short span of your life in the long run!

  • sounds normal to me. with di/di we were going every three weeks from 12-22, every 2 weeks 22-30, then weekly until 34 when it became biweekly. We did u/s at each visit for fluids, cervical length and cord flow, and growth scans monthly.
  • We didn't know we were having twins until the 20 week ultrasound, so I've been closely monitored since then (not sure what is typical prior to that point).

I saw my obgyn and mfm (for ultrasounds) every other week up until 28 weeks. Now, I'm down to weekly appointments for both. I've started weekly non-stress tests and the ultrasounds are scheduled, but I may not have them every week.

It does feel like a lot, but I'm glad the babies are being carefully watched. TTTS can happen so quickly.

I hope all goes well with your pregnancy!

  • My mo/di twins are being monitored every week because they are hovering right above stage 1 TTTS. Like so many have said, the risk for TTTS does not end until the second baby's cord has been cut. At the MFM/Peri clinic that I go to (we travel 1.5 hrs but others in the waiting room have to fly in!) they recommend all mo/di twins to be delivered by C-section for this reason. AND to not go past 37 weeks. Make sure you talk to your doc about these things. My docs are world renowned and I trust their judgment fully...I actually read about one of them in college!

  • that sounds right to me.  I'm also having cervical checks done.  TTTS is very serious and can occur at anytime. My MFM told me that he will stop worrying about that when the boys are delivered.

My boys have been measuring the same since the beginning, but at my last appt, there is a 23% size discordance.  Since both are still measuring on the large size, they are not too concerned, but its nice to know that they are keeping such a close eye on them.
