Dry Skin/Baby Acne/ Eczema

I have a 6 week old daughter and I am having a hard time figuring out whats going on with her skin. When I took her in for her one month appointment the doctor said her face was doing ok. I just feel it has got worse since then. I know he told me not to use anything but I just can't stand not using anything on her poor little face. I got Burts Bees Oil and have been using this on her face. I haven't really seen an improvement but I have only used it the last 2 nights. Anyone else's baby have only this issue on his/her face, ears, behind ears, and a little on head? What are you doing to help it if anything? Thanks Ladies!

Re: Dry Skin/Baby Acne/ Eczema

  • C has pretty bad baby acne right now. It's all over her face, a little on her ears, and a little up in her hairline.

It's completely normal and will go away. She only has it because her body is still processing all of the hormones I was passing to her when she was in my belly. But it'll go away.

  • Try California Baby Calendula cream. It's expensive but is amazing.

  • Just spoke with pedi about this today. She recommended Cetaphil or Cerave. Both in cream, not lotion, form. Both brands make a wash too. Works wonders on my older son who has excema.

  • Did ur Pedi say it was eczema? If so stop putting oil on it. I have severe dry skin as well as eczema and so does my 9 wk old DD. You must put a hypoallergenic fragrance free cream on the affected area several times a day. Whoever holds the baby CAN'T have perfume on including lotions. Make sure your clothes are washed in the same detergent you wash your LO in. If your LO is scratching make sure to have the hands covered. If he breaks the patches open and they weep it can cause an infection, especially at the ears. When you feed make sure to clean any skin that comes in contact with saliva or milk/formula with a washcloth. Now if you haven't put any true moisturizer on the skin make sure to have a washcloth (cool water) handy the first time you apply cream as it burns really bad the moment the baby reacts place the cloth on the area for relief. If LO is itchy 1% hydrocortisone cream can be applied very little to the area avoiding the eyes and mouth. I use it with my cream daily as its the only thing that allows my DD relief so she can sleep or she will scratch all night. If you need further details message me; I'm an encyclopedia when it comes to these skin issues. Good Luck!!

I agree with this. DD had horrible acne - her whole face and chest were covered.  I finally tried this after it had been 3 weeks with the acne continuing to get worse and it cleared it up in 3 days. Her skin looks beautiful now.

  • My DD had pretty bad acne and dry skin on her head and face. It has pretty much gone away on its own. My pedi did say that if it seemed persistent I could use 1% hydrocortisone cream on it, so you might want to try that.

  • I definitely recommend using Baby Aveeno eczema therapy lotion. It cleared my DD up really quick. I still use it every night before bed, and her skin looks and feels great. We also use Baby Aveeno shampoo/wash (lightly scented) and it works great for her too. But I believe Baby Aveeno makes an eczema wash.

  • Please can you advise what cream or lotion to buy for my LO with bad baby acne/rash. It keeps coming back, and it has gotten worst again, I can't figure out what is causing it to come out more, it makes his skin dry for the areas that is gone. So I have issue with dry skin and the rash. Pls help is giving me sleepless night. Thank You
  • I recommend a trip to the pediatrician. S/he can easily diagnose cause of the rash and recommend treatment.

  • My son's dermatologist recommended nizoral shampoo and cerave cream
  • MUSTELA!!!!!!!! My poor LO had the WORST baby acne... I use the mustela face wash for eczema prone skin and the physiobebe cleanser on non-bath days (and even on bath days if he is super slobbery or spitting up)... The acne cleared up literally within 2 days and it has kept it down for the most part. I swear by it!!!!!!!!!!
  • We use aquaphor mixed with the Aveeno baby lotion.
  • I use aquaphor too! I am a makeup artist and use it for dry skin, cuts and rashes on baby and me.
  • My baby had HORRIFIC baby acne and cradle cap.  The doctor said, “wait it out, it will go away.” Um no, not happening lady. I actually found a post here about Mustela products-they are MAGIC!!! The acne was completely gone within a few days and the cradle cap saw steady improvement until it was gone. I use the Mustela foaming shampoo for cradle cap.  I use the Mustela Physiobebe astringent followed by the Mustela lotion for Eczema on his face for the acne. You can buy it at Babies R Us.

I noticed he stopped rubbing his face on things all of the time after he started his treatment, so I wasn’t just being vain-the acne actually did cause him discomfort!

  • Aquaphor is like a miracle lotion!  It helped clear up my daughters baby acne and cradle cap!

How about getting to the source? I have a friend whose baby breaks out whenever she has dairy products. I would try to figure out the cause by keeping track of your diet to try and connect the dots (if you are BFing)

  • I have a 3 week old baby with the same problem. I clean his scalp and face daily with a cotton ball dipped in chamomile tea. I brew it fresh everyday let it cool down and while I'm breastfeeding him I will clean his face and scalp. Chamomile is often use for to treat skin conditions. It looks better already.
  • My DH picked up the baby Aveeno eczema cream tonight. Fingers crossed it works! I feel so bad for my little guy!
  • My pedi said it doesn't bother the baby so don't do anything about it but if it gets worse try 1percent hydrocortisone. I bought the Aveeno one at target and saw results in hours. It can dry out the skin though so don't use it constantly just 1-2 times a day till it gets better.
  • Ditto on finding a possible underlying cause. DS had wicked dry skin for his first year, would scratch til he bled. Finally figured out it was eggs and nightshades. We also have a family history of food allergies and eczema, however. Just a thought! And aquaphor was the the best lotion we found.
