Different nap scheds at daycare/home

DD has been in her new room for three weeks now.  She is still on one nap there (11-1 on a good day, less on a bad) but on the weekends (Fri-Sun) it's all I can do to keep her awake til 10.  Then she'll take another nap around 2 or 3.

Her sleep has been horrible at night since she moved to the new room.  She wakes, sometimes twice a night.  She used to be a better sleeper.

Should I make her push through the weekend morning nap and try to keep to the school schedule when she's at home?  I guess I could take her to the grocery store and just cross my fingers she doesn't fall asleep in the car on the way home.  Other than that, I don't know how to keep her awake without her throwing a total fit.

Re: Different nap scheds at daycare/home

  • DD was on a "1 nap at school, 2 naps at home" schedule for a good 2-3 months before she was ready to drop down to 1 nap full time. We just went with it. I would think that keeping her up on weekends would not improve nighttime sleep since it will just make her more overtired. Sorry. It's a really hard, awkward transition since it's not really following what the child is ready for yet.

  • My best guess is that she's having nighttime troubles because she isn't getting all of the sleep that she's used to/needs during the day.  I'd try to ride it out and give her ample opportunity to catch up on sleep during the weekend.

  • We chose to stick with the 1 nap daycare schedule at home.  BUT she had been a terrible napper prior to moving to the toddler room (maybe 45 minutes a day tops?), so it was a big improvement for her.  Around 10ish she'd start to wear down, so we'd really have to work at distracting her; we'd do lunch early, around 10:45 or 11:00, and that would help too.  And then she'd crash for a THREE hour nap (which was pretty awesome).  I'll mention too that DD did not sleep through the night until she switched to the toddler room, and now she does every night.

So basically we seem to have had the opposite sleep issues as you, so my response is probably not much use.  :P
