Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If you've moved to a toddler bed

Talk to me about how you made the transition into a toddler bed. About a week or so ago, DS managed to scale his way out of the crib using something beside it as leverage, which allowed him to jump onto the floor without so much as a scrape. Yesterday, however, the poor kid did a complete nose-dive out of the crib, complete with one of the scariest thuds I've ever heard. Gah.

So, we're making the move to a big-boy bed. Until it arrives and is set-up, I turned his crib around so that the short side faces the wall, so that should keep him put for a while. How did you go about it? Did you meet a lot of resistance? I'm pretty nervous. I have a sneaking suspicion that this kid will be up half the night pacing his room.

Re: If you've moved to a toddler bed

  • With my older daughter, we put a mattress on the floor and had her sleep in that for about a week. Once she no longer rolled off the mattress, we set up her bed. We actually skipped the toddler bed and went right for a twin bed.

With my younger one, she went to a toddler bed, but we skipped the mattress on the floor part. It had a rail on it and she has never fallen out of it.

  • We just set it up, and that was that.  Some nights she wakes up and comes through to us, some nights she sleeps all night in her bed.

She loves it, and spends more time "playing" in her room - putting her stuffed animals to bed etc.

  • The transition was horrible for DS.  His sleep (and ours) was disrupted all freaking summer.  It didn't stop until we got an OK to Wake clock and let him scream his head off well into the night a few nights.  :(

That said, every kid is different.  DD is crawling out of her crib and we may move her to a bed sooner than later.  She likes her sleep and isn't as .... uh .... curious as DS is, so I anticipate a much smoother transition with her.

  • We got the bed in the mail, put it together, and I said to my husband, why beat around the bush, tonight she will sleep in her big girl bed.  it's been two weeks now and sh eis doing great. she has rolled out twice but the last time just got up herself and went back into bed.  it'sbeen a successful venture so far! • This past weekend DD climbed out of her crib. We lowered it to the lowest setting and she still climbed out. So Tuesday afternoon I converted her bed to a toddler bed. She was so excited when she saw it. She loves that she can climb in it herself.

So Tuesday night after brushing her teeth I said "time for bed" and she climbed in her bed rolled to her stomach and I covered her with a blanket. That was that until i woke her up the next morning.

Same thing last night too. No fuss. I'm hoping this is it. That she will do great. I do have a gate at her door so that if she does get up that she can't roam the house.

Also make sure that you anchor furniture to the wall if you have a climber. We did that this weekend too. Now I'm not afraid of her being alone in her room.

  • Thanks for the input! I'm hoping it goes fairly smoothly. Time will tell, I guess. :)
