Getting ready in the morning

Getting DD dressed has become a battle, and I need help!  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this easier?  She is very opinionated about what she wears, and gravitates toward a favorite tank top and skirt.  Unfortunately, it's the middle of winter here and much too cold for that!  I've tried hiding them, but that sets off a tantrum, too.  I've tried giving her choices of acceptable shirts/pants, which worked for a while, but now she just says "no" to both, I tell her I'm going to choose, and she throws a fit.

I've started letting her wear her tank top under a warmer shirt, but she's now not happy with that, either...  Any ideas?  Please?  Smile

Re: Getting ready in the morning

  • i put the acceptable clothes in accessible drawers (bottom two) of the changing table. top drawer shirts, bottom drawer pants. and he opens and selects. i hide everything that is not acceptable (ie, short sleeved shirts) it seems to work as he has a big choice.

I do this as well. I also started taking DD shopping with me and letting her pick out her own clothes. I realize she is only three but I figure she has so little control over her world that if she feels more in control/secure by choosing her wardrobe so be it. I don't let her pick out everything the good majority of her clothes are things she has chosen. Right now she is really into track suits with short sleeve shirts under them or leggings with a skirt over them. Good luck!

  • When she has the tantrum about it, are you giving in? If yes, stop. Put the tank top away and deal with a few tantrums. I know it sucks..... but it will get better fast once she realizes tantrums dont work.

We tell DD to pick something out, she rarely asks for something that is not available and if she does throw a fit about not getting her favorite dress or something. We pick for her. If she throws a fit about that, she gets a time out. She learned fast that she can control her world of clothes to an extent, she has choices, so she can choose from those.

  • This past week, I have actually allowed DD to pick out her clothes the night before which has worked at well (hiding the inappropriate clothes, of course). Our mornings are going smoother. We'll see how long that lasts!

It usually ends with me wrestling her into her clothes while she yells.  I try not to give into tantrums- I know it does take a lot longer to get dressed than I'd like, so maybe I'm not being as consistent as I should.  I think I'll put the summer clothes away and start there.  Thanks!

This is an interesting idea.  I don't know if she'll quite get it yet, but I'll give it a shot.  I bet it would make things go a lot faster in the morning!

  • At first with DD, I would give her a choice of 2-3 items and she would pick her clothes.

Now, the night before at bedtime, she picks out her clothes, underwear, shoes and socks. They are all placed in the "special spot" - which is the floor in front of her dresser. That way, in the morning, it's all ready for her and she will just get dressed - no fightts, delays, or tantrums.

  • I have her clothes ready for in the morning. I pick her up out of her crib, grab her clothes, carry her downstairs and lay her on the couch, put a cartoon on and dress her while she's watching it. From the time I get her out of bed, to the time I brush her hair and we walk out the door is about 15 minutes.  She's wide awake by then.

My kid doesn't even want to wear clothes so I am no help ;)

This made me laugh- I have put away all warm-weather clothes and was ready to start fresh this morning, but then I realized we're not planning on going anywhere. So, why fight about it?  DD decided to spend most of the morning naked, silly girl!
