So far DD has used training toothpaste that is fluoride free. She had her 2 year well check on Monday and the Pedi said she should be getting some fluoride now. Usually what you get in tap water is fine, but in our city there is no fluoride added. Before I call the doctor again I thought I'd ask you ladies. What do you do about fluoride?
siggy should be here!
Re: Tooth paste?
DS1 (3.5) and DS2's (2) pediatric dentist didn't ok flourinated toothpaste until the age of 3 (they had their appointment in October). Personally, I would ask your dentist what THEY recommend vs what your pediatrician recommends just because the dentist deals with teeth day in and day out and it is their specialty. Just my 2 cents.
We also do not have fluoridated water. DS uses the fluoride-free toothpaste, but takes a flouride supplement (prescription from pedi). DD uses a fluoride toothpaste, and also has a fluoride supplement. Our dentist told me that they should continue to take those supplements until about age 12. She said the fluoride in the toothpaste is to help the teeth that are already there, and the flouride supplements are to help the teeth that are not yet there. I did not start fluoride toothpaste w/DD until she could spit it out regularly, probably around age 3 or so.
I'm wondering if this is what he intended. We got side tracked while talking about it. Our Pedi has been out for several months due to health issues and we were his third patient on his first day back. I'll call him tomorrow.
I would definitely talk to your dentist about this. They know WAY more about fluoride and the amount they need than a pedi does. If you take too much fluoride systemically it can cause problems with the teeth and bones, so until they are spitting it out after brushing I wouldn't be giving them very much, if any.
Our pedi said the same thing about starting flouride, and that it was "ok if he swallowed some." He's going to the dentist tomorrow with daddy (piggybacking on DH's appointment) and I'm going to ask there what they think.
