Santa is taking the diapers, Good idea??

DS just turned 3 and has gone on the potty but nothing  consistent. I will be home with him the week after Xmas so I was going to try a "potty Boot camp" I told him that Santa is taking the diapers and leaving him underwear.( I hope I dont scar him...ha!!!!) I wonder if I can really get him to stop wearing diapers. That would be a great gift for Momma!!!

  • you can try...  the boot camp thing didn't work w/ my daughter.  i just had to wait until she was ready.  good luck!

  • I think a "diaper fairy" would be ok (although I also kind of think if you need to go to that extreme, he might just not be ready yet... potty training is a whole different beast than things like giving up pacifiers or bottles), but I would not associate Santa with this, especially if the tradition and excitement of Santa is at all important to you.  I'm just seeing a huge potential for this to backfire if he's not ready, and for "Santa" to be the fall-guy and take all the blame, you know?

I agree with this. I think Santa bringing underpants is a fantastic idea!! but I wouldn't have him take the diapers. Another alternative option which I'm not sure would be any better, but have the elves take his diapers? I just wouldn't want to mess up the Santa tradition as being anything but pleasantries.

  • Could you have him throw away the diapers the night before, and then in the morning, Santa brings him underwear? That way your LO is in control of tossing them, and Santa isn't "taking them."

  • Can Santa make a stop at a Jewish house and come take ours too?
  • Yikes. Do you really want to start potty training boot camp on Christmas day, or even the subsequent days when its so fun to enjoy new toys, etc? Its really rough on everyone, or can be. If I were you I'd do undies for christmas, wait a couple days, and then be excited about wearing them. I don't see why you need to "throw away" the diapers. What if you need them for a long errand run or more likely night. That tactic seems like it would confuse a three year old to me. Good luck!

     I'm of this opinion.

  • I don't think it is a great idea. Potty learning is not something that is forced upon a child. If they are ready, they will do it. Have Santa bring new undies but refrain from having him take the diapers. My son is potty trained and that tactic of taking the diapers would never have worked on him. Good luck!

  • Not a fan.  Also would agree that Christmas day isn't the best choice of days to cold turkey to undies.  New toys will keep him from concentrating on going potty.  I'd wait for a holiday calm down first...
