Super bad diaper rash - dr. visit?

So I picked up DS from school yesterday and he had a terrible terrible diaper rash. Super red, puffy, from the front to the back. I changed him (he screamed of course). I gave him a warm bath last night and let him air dry. Lubed him up with lots of diaper cream last night (California Baby) and it looked way better this morning.

Now it's back again (school just called) and apparently super bad. I talked with my nurse at the pedi, and she gave me some care instructions and said to call back in the AM if it's the same/worse to come in for an appointment in case we need prescription diaper cream.

Anyone ever have this happen before? I gave him baby food apples for the first time this week (the nurse said this could be why he had the sudden outbreak).

I feel terrible for my little guy. Love any suggestions you have. Thanks.

  • I would get a heavy duty cream and switch diapers.  He could be reacting to the diaper as we've noticed in disposables, N will react to some diapers more than others.  And when N breaks out (which is way too often), CB does not do the trick.  You need something thick - Triple Paste or the purple Desitin, Dr. Smiths - something good and thick. If it's not getting better, you may want to have him checked to see if it's yeast.

  • Try Triple Paste!  I had this happen with Reese and doctor told me to use this and she was fine the next day.

  • So sorry to hear about the rash! Poor baby.

Try letting it air dry as much as possible. We play in the kitchen since it's tiled to give it some extra dry time. We also do a cream then baby powder combo to create a barrier. I've also been known to break out the baby powder and hair dryer (low of course) on low to make sure all the moisture is gone.

    Good luck!

  • Is it red dots?  Not bumps but tiny red dots?  If so, it could be a yeast infection.  DD had one and it came on VERY fast.  Pedi called in some nystatin and it cleared right up.  I hope he gets better soon!
  • I second triple paste anytime D is red we get the triple paste and it is gone overnight.
