Car Seats and Grocery Carts

https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/61455378.aspx

This is a post from the December board (I love lurking and seeing all the babies).  I see moms placing the car seat in the top portion of the grocery cart all the time, and it didn't occur to me that this is could be unsafe. Thought I'd share in case it didn't occur to others as well.

Re: Car Seats and Grocery Carts

  • Definitely a great reminder.

I remember a few months ago someone posted an article about a lady losing her LO because they fell out of the cart. An employee was helping her to her car... could you imagine the guilt?!

  • yeah it never seemed like a good idea to me... it just kind of sits there. Then there are the random freak accident stories that are so tragic.

best shopping solution for me was the moby or ergo (I used both - but not at the same time Wink) so you have your baby secure and your hands free and you can still use the basket part of the cart (rather than putting the carseat down there, rendering the cart useless.)

  • I have never liked putting them up there. Either they are leaning far forward or back. It never fit well so I always put the seat in the basket portion and just worked around it.

  • Not only grocery carts, but don't put the carseats on any elevated surface. We treated the carseat like we do my H's photography equipment: it can't fall off the floor!
  • I did it all the time and will continue to do it with this LO. I feel comfortabel judging for myself whether ot not the seat seems stable on the top of the cart.

Yes!  Even baby in a bouncy seat on the table or counter makes me cringe.

In the case of gravity vs. squirmy baby.... gravity always wins.  And I'm not willing to even put any baby in my care or sight in possible danger of falling, even if I come off as super OCD, it's not a chance I'm willing to take.

  • Even more dangerous that the grocery carts are the upside down highchairs or slings.  I saw a horrible accident with one of those awhile back.  We always kept the carseat on the floor, a booth or in the big part of the shopping cart.
