Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Going from 2 naps to 1 nap on non-daycare days

DD has never been a great napper/sleeper but she's doing better these days esp at DC and I posted about naps a little while ago but have more questions now.

On daycare days (3 days a week): Isabel gets one nap 12:30-2pm with a cat nap on the way in most mornings.Bedtime is 6-6:30pm. I am ok with an early bed time because she will get up around 6am every time no matter how late she goes to bed.

At home (depending on when she wakes up):typically a morning nap 3-4h after she wakes so around 10-11am for an hour and then needs a second one that is shorter about 4h later (2pm) for like 30-45m she goes to bed at 6:30pm on these days.

I think she officially needs one nap when she is home with me but I just don't know how to do it.  So I have some logistical questions:

1. How do you keep your toddler going from 6am-noon? Or should I shoot for 11am and adjust bedtime?

2. How do you manage errands without your LO sleeping in the car? DD loves car naps and if she sleeps in the car there's no getting her to sleep once home even if its a 10m ride/nap.

3. If we start around 11am can we move the nap time up? Later?

Re: Going from 2 naps to 1 nap on non-daycare days

  • We're moving DD to one nap at home. That is what she does at daycare too. Normally on the weekends we are out running errands so her nap time varied but then she started fighting naps. I realized that I needed to be consistent with nap time at home like she is with naps at daycare. So we are doing lunch at 11:30 and nap at noon just like at daycare. Hoping this will help to get her to nap better at home.

For car naps I do all I can to keep her up in the car. The second she falls asleep in the car naptime is ruined.

    Good luck.

  • This was us a few months ago. LO started daycare once a week where they nap from 1-3 and he was still taking 2 shorter naps at home so we had to work to make the big transition. What really helped was planning to go do something late morning when he used to get tired and wanted to nap. He would stay up much easier if he was busy so we would do a playdate or go to the store or something. And the hardest part (I totally know) is keeping them awake in the car. So make sure it's somewhere close so the drive is not too long. What helped me was handing him crackers, one at a time. He usually stays awake if there's food involved. This is probably against the rules of parenting due to choking hazards but I just do little cheese crackers and keep my eye on him. It takes some time but eventually they will be able to make it til after lunch no problem. You can move the nap up a little but I would try to make it as consistent with daycare as possible so LO will be able to adapt more quickly. Good luck!

  • Grant goes to daycare 2-3 days a week. There was like a 3 months period where he would take one nap on daycare days and 2 naps on days he was at home. He was just much more entertained there and was able to easily stay up until close to noon, but at home he could barely make it to 10:30. I just didn't worry about it and let him continue his 2 naps here. Eventually, he went down to one all the time but he still naps like an hour earlier at home than he does at daycare. Also, he sleeps about 1 1/2 at daycare and closer to 3 hours at home. So to answer your questions...

    1. How do you keep your toddler going from 6am-noon? Or should I shoot for 11am and adjust bedtime? I would shoot for 11. I think it would be miserable for you both to try to keep her awake until noon.

    2. How do you manage errands without your LO sleeping in the car? DD loves car naps and if she sleeps in the car there's no getting her to sleep once home even if its a 10m ride/nap. If we do errands in the morning it's early and they are quick ones. Now I can keep him out until close to 11 but when he was going back and forth between one and two naps he would fall asleep in the car by 10am. We do most of our errands in the afternoon after he's napped and eaten lunch.

    3. If we start around 11am can we move the nap time up? Later? Not sure what you mean.
