Bridesmaid at 6 month...how to pick a dress?!

Hey everyone! Tonight I am going to David's Bridal to pick out my dress for my friend's April 28 wedding.. I will be 6 months by then. Soo..how do I pick?  I know they have a few that are more flowy at the bottom half and stop after the chest...but I really have no clue how big my belly will be by then since this is my first.  I'm 5'5 and pretty petite..any advice on sizing and choosing?? Thanks!

  • Sometimes places like that will have a bump that you can strap on. It's not a great indicator since we all grow differently, but it might help. Otherwise, go with your instincts on picking something with a high (or no) waistline and flowy bottom. And depending on your local David's and their reliability, you may be able to wait a little while before ordering. I know I picked mine at the last minute and it came in with plenty of time to spare. You may be able to wait until you're showing a bit more to try on a dress specifically for size.

  • Also, 6 months should be a super cute preggo bridesmaid. Still energetic and happy, not super uncomfortable and huge.

  • Definitely got with an empire waist! That is the cut that stops just below your boobs and flows out from there. As for size, I'm not sure, you might need to go a few sizes up and just have it altered closer to the wedding day. Unfortunately I don't think there is anyway to be for sure since you've never been pregnant, and experienced how big you might be. A good seamstress will likely be your best friend. :)

    This, exactly.

  • When I got married last August one of my bridesmaids was . . . just about 6 months, too!  We did David's Bridal, and they did have a pillow to help guess at how it would look come wedding time.  They didn't have any specifically maternity dresses in the color we needed, but she got THIS ONE I think two sizes bigger and it worked out perfectly.  I think she did need to get the bust altered down a little bit, but she looked great!

  • I'm going to be a bridesmaid at 7 months and luckily my friend picked a bridesmaid dress that also came in a maternity fit. The lady who I ordered the dress from just ordered an insanely large maternity size for me because she said you can always make it smaller but it's hard to make it bigger.

  • I used to work a DB!  :)

Make sure to ask them what the lead time on the dress is.  A lot of times it can be as low as 6-8 weeks.  Also, add about a month on for alterations (depending on how busy your store is).  That puts you on ordering by the end of February.  You could pick out a couple of styles and go back in in February when you are a little bigger and see what you like/order.  Remember, you can also buy anything that is in the store.  So if they would have your size, you could walk home with the dress that day.  Also, if push comes to shove you could ask what other stores have the dress in the correct size and have them ship it to you (it will cost a little extra).

And yes, they should have a little fake bump for you to try on dresses with! :)  There are a lot of super cute flowy, not necessarily maternity, dresses.  You shouldn't have any problem finding one you like!  Good luck!

  • I was a bridesmaid at 6 months with my 1st pregnancy.  I had basically JUST found out I was pregnant when it was time to buy dresses.  I got one that was empire waist but VERY similar to the ones the other bridesmaids had (this was a wedding where they were all wearing the same), and obviously same color.  And I got it 2 sizes too big.  At the time of the wedding it had to be taken in slightly at the bust.  But ended up working out great!
