Do you do anything for New Years Eve?

The thought of staying out until 1-2 am and then having to get up with a toddler at 6 am does not sound appealing to me at all. Am I a party pooper or are other people doing something on NYE?

Re: Do you do anything for New Years Eve?

  • nah, I say go big or go home. so we're staying home :-)

although we are having another couple over, they have a one year old daughter. we are going to have a late dinner (at our house) after the kids are in bed and then probably watch a movie and/or play some games...and there will be plenty of cocktails for everyone (but me *sob*). The plan is to stay up until midnight, but we'll see.

we all used to get pretty crazy back before kids, so I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything by not going to big parties these days :-)

  • we've stayed home before we had sprout.  so we are old school party poopers! LOL.

we usually feed him something for dinner & then have a "special" dinner (we've done dinners of fondue, grilled seafood & extensive meat/cheese platters in the past). not sure what we're going to have this year.

the food is better, the booze is cheaper and i don't have to dress up.  it's a win-win-win for me!

  • We used to go out or have a big party at our house. We've significantly reduced our New Year's tradition in the last few years. Since LO will be just over a month old this year, we're staying in and probably not having anyone over either. I'll be lucky if I get to see the ball drop...it's all worth it though.

  • We're lame and we're staying home too. It's almost impossible to find a sitter and everything is so expensive on NYE. Every year since we had DD we have stayed home and made fondue after the kids go to bed. This year we're doing 3 courses, cheese, broth and chocolate. This pregnant lady is already excited about eating it ;) We stay up until the ball drops and then head to bed.

  • We're having people over for dinner and then we'll play games/chase babies until midnight.  Since we don't host Thanksgiving or Christmas, I use this as my chance to make a big meal.  DH will deep fry a turkey and I'll do traditional T-day/Xmas sides and use the good china.

We've invited 13 adults and 4 kids (all under 3).  Not sure how many are coming yet.

  • As of now, we're having a couple over. They don't have kids but aren't big on hitting the bars, going out anyway, so it'll be fun. We'll probably play games and do the whole countdown. We'll probably party for a while, although our childless friends get way tired before we do, for some reason. Go figure.

  • Nope.  For the past few years, we have just stayed in and gone to bed at the regular time.  Before I was pregnant, we would at least stay up until midnight, but now we don't even try to do that.  It's just no fun the next day to be exhausted.
  • The year DD was born we had a few people over for a quiet evening in, but last year I'm pretty sure I was in bed by 11.  We'll probably stay home again this year.  Maybe if my parents are still here that night I'll try and stay up 'til midnight - then they could get up with T and I could have some hope of sleeping in.

  • before kids and when T was a newborn, we did first night in alexandria. the past several years, we have gone out for a fancy dinner with two other couple friends. then we've gone back home. one year, after dinner we invited a friend and her boyfriend over for midnight toast.

this year, we are doing our annual dinner, then going to a kid-friendly party (one of the dinner friends is hosting). we will be heading home by 9. A is in a really good sleeping place right now and I don't want to mess that up! even if she weren't, i'd still want to go home. i want no part of two children up past midnight!

  • New Year is my big holiday, I don't care about Xmas but I love NY. Sadly, since kids I just don't have the energy to party. Last year we got lobster so we may do the same after the kids go to bed.

  • We seem to do something different every year - some years we've gone out, with friends, without friends, stayed home. This year, we've already bought our champagne and will probably make a fancy dinner for ourselves after C goes to bed. We actually did watch the ball drop last year and had a nice date night on the couch, so we'll probably do that again.
  • A few years ago we would go out, then we started having a bash at our house, and last year we decided to do a smaller dinner with 3 other couples and did a murder mystery game - it was great!  The other couples were either also PG or had a small kid so they came around 6 and put the LO to bed, then came downstairs for dinner, the game and to watch the ball drop. I expected people to leave right after that but we were all having such a good time chatting we were up til 3 - even the non-drinkers!

  • Like others, we'll have a fancy dinner, some champagne and hopefully I'll make it to midnight this year. Last I fell asleep around 10:30ish. This year will be better since DS is sleeping through the night.

  • DH's friend hosts a new years gathering each year where families and kids are invited so we usually go to that. It usually starts at 7pm. If the grandparents are babysitting, we try to stay until at least 10pm but if not, we have to leave around 8:30pm. It feels a bit lame but honestly, the best way to start off the new year is with a good night's rest.

this is us too. I just don't have the energy or desire to go out with hundreds of other people for the sake of it being New Years. the past 4 years we have done a nice dinner with our next door neighbors who are also good friends, watched the ball drop, gone home and crawled in bed. now that we both have kids, it's all done a little later, but same idea.

  • We have friends who have for the last 3 years hosted a family friendly party, which I think is perfect for when the kids are young.  The kids run around, the parents eat good food and if we make it to midnight, we consider it a success;)  I have to say that I enjoy celebrating the New Year, but I think it is one of the most over-hyped holidays in terms of expectations.
  • Nope.  It's hard to get a sitter.  I'm pregnant.  Maybe next year......

  • Usually we rent a beach house with friends, but this year three of the eight couples are due in late December or early January so we are hosting dinner at our house and another couple is hosting new year's day. All of the out of town folks are coming so it will be a lot of fun to catch up. I highly recommend the house rental, its great because the kids sleep upstairs and the adults all get to spend the whole evening together. Plus your together for a long weekend of fun.
  • When I was single I'd typically fly to visit my brother who always either hosted a party or went out for a big $$ champagne dinner at a restaurant.  That was fun when I was younger and had more energy.

With DH and before we had kids we typically got together with one other couple and we'd go to their house for dinner, games, drinks, then sleep over their house and have a nice breakfast.  After we started having kids they came to our house for the same - put the kids to bed, eat, drink, games, be merry, watch the ball, sleep at our house.

DH wants to start a new annual tradition this year, going to my one set of in-laws who live near the Chesapeake Bay for the weekend.  I'm not at all happy with this plan, but I have to suck it up because we always spend Christmas with my family, so this is his desire to spend part of the holidays with a portion of his family.  I'm feeling bratty about it because a) I don't like these in-laws, b) therefore I don't really feel like packing up all the crap you have to pack when you road trip with three kids for a two night stay, and 3) there is this really nice couple I know who are having a kid friendly party locally and I've never been to their party... and I really want to go to that.  Hurmph.  If we do this annually I'm going to start really hating New Years.

  • I don't remember the last time we did something for NY's.  We rarely even stay up to watch the ball drop.
