Getting enough

I know I am probably just being paranoid but figured id throw this out there.

My LO will be 3 weeks on thursday he has been EBF from day 1. He had been nursing every 1.5-2 hours and would nurse anywhere from 30 min to 1 hour. As of the last few days he will eat every 1.5-3 hours but only eats for maybe 15 min.

I am worried maybe this isn't a long enough time for him to get all the food he needs, or that maybe his decreased nursing time will slow down my supply and how do I know if he is fully emptying my breast?

He still has regular wet diapers but his BM have decreased....

Im a FTM so I am unsure and just want some reassurance!

Re: Getting enough

  • He's probably getting more efficient.  Gosh, I don't remember either of my kids ever eating for more than 20-30 min. and I thought I heard somewhere that if they are on the breast longer than 30ish (guessing) min. that they are burning more calories than they are consuming.  Have you seen kellymom.com?  It was my BFing bible and super informative.

FWIW, at 3 weeks with both my kids they had major growth spurts and with DD that's when her colic began.  Just a heads up about the growth spurts in case you feel like you don't have enough milk in the next couple days.   https://kellymom.com/bf/normal/growth-spurt.html

  • Thanks for the info, i will check out kelly mom too and see what i can find.
  • If he seems content when he pulls off at 15 minutes then he's probably gotten enough.  Babies will let you know when they are still hungry!  I had the opposite problem. DD never stopped sucking.  She'd go for an hour or just fall asleep from being tired of sucking.  I don't know why - the shield added to the problem I'm sure - but she just wasn't getting milk while nursing and wasn't gaining weight.  It sounds like your man is just doing a great job - congrats!

  • Everything is fine! My son (who is a very chunky baby) has never nursed more than 20 minutes at a time, ever! They get more efficient as they get used to nursing, and some babies and moms are just naturally efficient. If LO was hungry still they would let you know. But, I remember worrying about the same thing when DS was first born, but after going through it I realized its fine, as long as your getting enough wet/soiled diapers your good to go. If your worried about supply, pump in between feedings.  Keep up the good work!
