Ugh, ribs, wth?!

Okay I know what it is -- it's the uterus moving up, blah blah blah.

But it feels like everything is going OVER my ribs instead of stretching out my ribs.  It's very uncomfortable and feels like my ribs are caving in, right under my boobs.  I have a naturally small waist (please note: waist only, and in proportion to the rest of me -- my hips are naturally quite large).  I guess I assumed it would stretch out but until recently everything's been lowlowlow.

This is brand new as of last night / this morning.  I think full-panel pants make it feel worse.  Do your ribs ever stretch out??  Or does stuff just lie on top of them?

  • I'm only half as far along in my pregnancy as you but, I was just reading last night (In the Mayo Clinic book) that a woman's ribs can stretch out as much as 2-3 inches during pregnancy. Maybe your ute had a growth spurt and your ribs just need a bit to catch up?

Hope you have some relief soon!

  • Your ribs stretch out.  My rib cage is definitely way bigger- I have gotten extensions for my bras.  Babies can't be on top of them- I just asked my OB about that this week.  It's weird because sometimes I feel like baby B is on top of my ribs, but he said it's just not possible.  So hard to tell what's going on in there!

  • Hi Ninja!

I've only noticed discomfort in my ribs after i've been sitting without a pillow behind my back. As long as I have a pillow, my ribs have been okay for the most part.. Does that help?

  • I'll have to see!  I do notice it more at work.

After the winter holiday I'll have to see if I can get a better chair, haha.  I've already swapped out my old one for a regular one, but an office chair w back support may be the ticket.

    Thanks for the tip!! :)

I asked the docor and he told me that the pain I am feeling is because of the stretching.  I guess the ligaments/tendons get lax to allow the ribcage to expand and you end up with stretched nerves that can be really painful.  He called it the 'pregnancy lean' when pregnant women are leaning to one side or the other to try and stretch out from the pain.  No fun at all. :(

Aaahhh for some reason it makes me feel better that the pain IS from stretching.  It felt like my ute was crushing my ribs IN.

Okay.  I can deal with that.  And I already do the lean.  It sounds like a dance move (like the stanky leg).
