Spitting up/out milk?

I've been nursing using a nipple shield (DS is five weeks old) and started nursing without it this week. However, he is spitting out milk during feedings now. Not like soured milk, but it seems to be just milk; he unlatches spits out a bunch of milk, then wants to nurse more. He spit out a bunch of milk three times in our last session. What is up with that? I never noticed him doing this when we use the shield.

Re: Spitting up/out milk?

  • shields tend to slow the flow of milk, wonder if that's how he's dealing with your letdowns being more flow than he is used to.  I would put a burp rag under you guys and not worry much.

  • I agree, that your flow is faster, give him time he should get used to it.
  • He's probably getting milk faster without the shield.  Just like they have to learn to latch properly he will adjust and learn to suck based on this new flow of milk.
