A question about eggs

The chicken kind

I have eggs in my fridge.

I am going out of town for a week.

Should I pitch them tonight (trash night) or can I cook with them next week when we get back?

Re: A question about eggs

  • I think they'll be fine. I often have eggs in my fridge for more than a week.

  • I think they should have a date on them. If not, I would pitch them, but then again I do that with all food like that when I go out of town.

  • Mine have an expiration date on them, which is usually a month or so after you buy them.

Ditto. I usually use mine for 2 weeks ::shrugs:: not sure if I'm supposed to, but always have.. never been sick from them!

  • Gotta love google...

Fill up a pan with enough cold water that would cover the egg.  Put the egg in the water.  If it sinks, you're good.  If it floats, pitch them.

FWIW, I have farm-fresh eggs that I've had for weeks, and they're still good.

    Who knew?

  • I've never worried about my eggs.   When I get fresh eggs from the farm...they usually don't last too long in my house... but a rule of thumb is about 6 weeks from Farm.

I've eaten eggs out of my refrigerator after 2 months and they were fine.  Crack them open and smell them or look at them, but I wouldn't be too worried.  Almost all eggs in the grocery stores are pasturized anyway, so the chance of getting sick is pretty low.

    Fabulously interesting!

And thanks all for the advice.  I really didn't want to throw out 5 eggs if they would be fine next week!

That's what we do.  My grandfather taught me that trick as a kid (he was a farmer).

Yep, I learned that too from my parents when I was little.

  • Hard boil them when you get back. The older the egg, the less the shell sticks when you peel them. True story.
Impatiently waiting to TTC #4 in Fall 2012.
  • Random egg fact: they really don't need to be refridgerated.  They are here, but I assume that's because they are mass distributed.
