I need a new brush. Only, there's too many choices and I have no idea what to get that will be "appropriate" for my hair.
I have a lot of hair. Lots and lots of it. It's thick, not thin at all. And it's kinda horse-hairish (thanks mom!). It's heavy. And it's somewhat curly.
Yes, I have crap hair.
I bought a paddle brush but I'm not really liking it because it's giving me a bit of static, but I'm sure that's more my hair's fault than the brush.
Can you help me find a good brush (and I don't want to spend $$$ on a freaking brush, thanks)?
Re: help me buy a brush
This.
ETA: I've always used a brush like this https://www.conair.com/antistatic-cushion-brush-p-1056-1_124_136.html and have always liked it. Something about the plastic bristles.
fuxxer
You don't have crap hair, it's quite curly (not somewhat curly), and you don't need a brush. You need to STOP brushing and combing your curls, it's counter-productive. Use your fingers to detangle in the shower with conditioner. That's it. I promise. Your hair will become easier to manage and more pleasing to your eye. If you absolutely MUST do more, you can finger detangle before you get in the shower, but that's it. On non shower days, don't run anything through your curls at all. It will break them up, make them grow, and create more frizz. Trust me, I deal with hair that is far more challenging that yours on a regular basis.
As a bonus, your fingers are free.
I was hoping you might chime in, M. And actually, since my Brazilian Blowout with you how many years ago (2?), my hair is not as curly and crazy enough, I kinda miss it! It's waaaay less curly but not straight. It's ridiculous.
So no brushing huh? I never comb it, so that's not a problem, but I suppose I could stop brushing it too. Thanks for the tip! And I love free.
MMT, strangely enough THAT is the brush I just bought! Your hair is much more fine than mine, I think, and not crazy like mine, so of course it works for you...
It's probably in part a subtle change in how you are styling it, unless you are growing your hair out. It's been 16mos since you had it done, so the 8" of hair closest to your scalp hasn't been treated and it doesn't change how it grows out.
But yes, no brushing or anything else that disturbs the curls. My hair is halfway down my back now (I just had 4" cut off on Saturday and it's still below my bra strap), not quite as curly as yours but just as thick or thicker, and I don't remember the last time I used a brush or comb on it. Surprisingly, it's not one large tangled rat's nest.
Yes, very very different hair!
Hmm, that makes sense. It's much curlier on the inside.
And I am, indeed, growing it out. I can't decide if I want another blowout or if I want to embrace the curls again. I just hate this in-between stage.
When you put your hair up in a ponytail, do you just try to get it all not-lumpy by using your fingers then? I'm all about a very slicked back (sans product, obvi) ponytail and it gets on my last nerve when there are parts sticking out. Then I over-use my brush and my hair gets bigger and bigger and bigger...
i only brush my hair with a straightening brush when i straighten it a few times a month. other than that, i agree with m_and_m and use my fingers only!
and my mom has those $$$$ mason pearson brushes and dayam they are nice
You still need to finger detangle, and more moisture. You're probably not using enough conditioner, or you have silicone buildup. Strip it out, ditch the 'cones, and moisturise the heck out of it. :-)
