Breastfeeding

Why is he doing this?

DS has had a bad few days.  To make a long story short, he was diagnosed with reflux on monday.  He has been really fussy between that and being really gassy the last few days.  The last couple of days he will be nursing, then when he gets sleepy he will yank himself off of my breast and pull my nipple with him.  Then he is frantic about trying to get back on.  But he is so frustrated it takes awhile and he doesn't latch good.  Also, before he yanks off he will grunt and either arch or pull his legs up a lot of the time. He does it multiple times each feeding unless he is wide awake.  Then he does fine.  He has also wanted to nurse constantly.  It is killing my nipples.  They are all cracked up now.  I don't know why he is doing this.  Is he refluxing?  Is he cramping? He is on medicine for both. Is he frustrated because he isn't getting enough?  He seems mad when it happens.  I checked and I can express milk so I know they aren't empty.  I don't know what to do.

Also, I think my breasts are hard for him to stay connected to.  He has always lost his latch easy if I move or anything while he is nursing. But I saw the LC in the hospital, and she never told me anything was wrong.

Re: Why is he doing this?

  • It sounds like he is just yawning and loosing his latch.  I think when babies are hungry they get frustrated.  this is what your experience.  maybe when he turns away - redirect him and help him relatch properly.  Have you bought lansanoh cream.  Thta helps huge with cracked nipples.

  • My LO was doing the yanking thing. He grunts and pulls himself off with my nipple in his mouth! We've been giving gripe water and it works wonders! Its expensive to do $10 a bottle (per week) but worth it!

That is exactly what he is doing!  I am giving gripe water, but only a couple of times a day.  Maybe I should do more.

  • Could be the reflux. My LO was exhibiting similar behavior and it's one of the factors that led to her reflux diagnosis. The doctor said that she was pulling off due to pain. But my LO wasnt very sleepy when she pulled off. Her face scrunched up and she seemed aggravated.

  • I could have written this post myself! This has been happening for 2 weeks, more at night and whether sleepy or awake though. I'm going insane tonight. She seems soo hungry, but latches on and off over and over again. We started reflux meds on sunday and I'm seeing a very slight improvement. I'm at a loss. For your nipples - my OB prescribed me nuemanns ointment or something back in my 2nd week as I was really sore. It's amazing stuff.
