Not STTN at 8.5 months...normal?

I read all the time here that by 12 weeks most twins were STTN. Mine still aren't at almost 9 months...namely my DS who wakes as often as 5 times a night. He usually drinks 2 bottles and other times just needs to be patted or picked up for a while.  dD wakes at least one time to drink although the both eat and drink good throughout the day.

My older DD was STTN at 5 weeks so I don't know if this is a twin thing or what...I just know we are tired and would like some sleep.

Any advice or tips?

  • Have you tried not giving them bottles?  I think its pretty safe to say that at 9 months they don't really need to eat during the night.  Are you feeding them table food during the day??  Don't know how you feel about CIO, but that might be an option because they are probably just waking up due to a routine you have established over the last 9 months.

  • Yes, unfortunately I agree with you about the quasi self imposed routine. I ferberized my daughter with great success, but how can we CIO without waking up the other twin and our other DD??  Looks like you have a toddler too, how do you practice CIO w/o disturbing her?  Oh, and we only have a two bedroom apartment so there's not a lot of wiggle (read: quiet) space available.

Thx for the reply, I need all the advice I can get.

  • Ours are 4 mo and not STTN, but one is just now hitting 12 lbs so they're so small still. Our pedi said once they're over 12 lbs we can sleep train but we're not going to until 6 mo adjusted. Come Feb though, we are getting friendly with Ferber.

fwiw, neither of our babies wakes the other.

We also live in a small 2 bedroom apt and are having the same problem with DD not STTN (except we don't have a toddler too). Our DS has been STTN since about 12 weeks.  We read up on CIO and the Ferber Method but it seems like we either need to just except that my son will get woken up or that we can't do CIO.  I'm hoping someone has some good tips and replies to your post.

  • My girls are 8.5 months old, and not consistently STTN.  Within the past two weeks Tannah has started STTN if Harper doesn't wake her up.  Tannah had an ear infection for almost two months, and I think that was causing her to wake up.  Now that it's cleared up, she's sleeping much better.  I've set a one feeding per night limit (which I know they don't really need, but I'm not ready to make them drop it yet), and we've had to let them cry some if they wake up more than that.  It's hard, but seems to be pretty effective.
  • Ours were 11 months. For us, it was that we needed to separate them. Different rooms and further they couldn't sleep in our room with us. So, we gave up our bedroom and slept on an air mattress until our house was finished being built. It was a long 6 months.

  • All interesting thoughts, thx!  My DD wakes only once to drink but DS can wake as often as 5 times!  We have given up our bedroom and sleep on the sofa but they are so damn loud they wake up the whole house. Part of my fears the hatred also from our neighbors with CIO, too.

Oh, and my tonsils are so infected they recommend removing them because I just can't get the rest to get my body healthy again after kid-nursing-twin pregnancy-nursing.  Big sigh.

  • Mine are 9.5 months and still not STTN. I was mean a couple of weeks ago and switched their overnight bottles to water only. That did not go over well and I caved, but I now will give one 4oz bottle at night. If they finish that, they only get water. For the past week our schedule has been bedtime at 6:30-7pm, bottle around 1-2am (for each), wake up at 6:30-7am. I am happy with only getting up once to feed as it is SO much better than the 4 and 5 times per baby that were happening before.

I also spread a handful of binkies around DD's crib so she can grab one herself in the middle of the night. DS won't take a bink, but DD can't sleep without one.

We have a two bedroom house and separating them is not an option. They rarely wake each up other up though.
