Husbands Leave Question.

How long did your DH or SO take off from work to help with the kids?

I am due in June. That is DH busiest time of the year. Both his boss and his boss' boss said that he would only get 3-4days off.  We both think that this is totally unfair.  He is saving up vacation time for when the twins come and wants to take as much time off as needed.  So I guess I am wondering how much time did your DH or SO take off work to help?

Re: Husbands Leave Question.

  • He used vacation time and took 3 weeks and a few days. Not nearly enough for me, but that's everything he had for the year.

  • I had my c-section on a Friday afternoon, so DH was at the hospital with me all weekend.  My BF came on Monday while he went to work.

Then because the girls ended up in the NICU (and I was a MESS), he took off Tues-Friday, but it was not planned.

He went back to work the following week while my Mom stayed with us.  Then he took the week after that off as planned.

I'm not sure what type of job he has, but if he's got vacation time, and they know he has a baby(s) on the way- that's pretty sh*tty that they're dictating when he can take vaca.  I'm assuming it's not a corporate job.

  • He got 2 weeks (military-paternity leave starts on birthday, no exceptions), but they were in the NICU the whole 2 weeks, so when they came home I was on my own.

My mom promised to come out and help, but she made up some excuse for why she couldn't come-and is STILL making excuses for why she can't visit.  I digress.

Its hard, but doable.  I hope he gets to use his vacation time so you get some help!

No he is a store manager for a pool supply store.  I am really starting to hate his job!

  • My DH took 2 weeks.  One week while I was in the hospital (well 5 days) and then stayed home for the following week.  By the second week I was fine to take care of them on my own.
  • Is he not covered by FMLA?

  • technically my scheduled c section wont be later than jan 28th although my doctor says she highly doubts i'll go that long. My husband is a Police Officer and is assigned a 20 day furlo every year. we got lucky and his is January 8-28th, but if i end up going until my "due date" we'll be out of luck. He get an automatic 3 days off when the babies come and then we're hoping he can add on some personal days or time to the end as needed.

  • My husband planned to take 3-4 weeks and ended up taking 8 weeks (due to multiple factors...). I give so much credit to those who have to do it on their own after only a few days. I am so grateful MH was able to take such a long leave.

TTC for 3 years. Finally successful after 5 IUIs and 2 cycles of IVF. Our amazing twins were born 5 weeks early on 8/16/11. Found out April 2012 that our di/di twins are ID.

  • DH's company used to give men 6 weeks paternity leave... but RIGHT before we had the twins they changed it to only 2 weeks and people went apeshit on them- b/c so many people had planned leave, etc....  so the company allowed the men to apply for an extra 2 weeks if they claimed they were "primary caregiver" which IMO is bullshit.... but hell, with 2 babies- he got one as his primary and got the extra 2 weeks... so he was off for 4 weeks total.  He could have taken more time with vacation days, etc- but we wanted to save those if he needed to take sick days to care for a sick me, or sick babies, etc.

Our state (NJ) also allows some time off for men now... and men can take unpaid time with many companies, etc.

a few days??? your DH's company sucks balls.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • DH had his vacation time... it was close to 3 weeks, but we decided since I had the boys so early and they were going to be in the NICU so long... he'd take 1 week off to hang out in the NICU with me and then go back.  When the boys came home he took off a couple days and saved the rest of his time for when I had to go back after 6 weeks so he could stay with them 2 weeks... before I was out for the summer (teacher).

  • My DH was able to take all his available time (vaca & sick) as FMLA leave. All together he would have had 5wks off, but we chose for him to work half time instead (2 10h shifts per wk), so he had 10wks of half time. Having him home was great, but I can also tell you it's doable on your own. The first 2 days both boys were home from NICU I was on my own, figuring things out one at a time as I went. You'll do it!

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • My DH took off the day of the birth. It was all they would give him, and the company was too small to qualify for FMLA. My mother flew up and stayed with us for two weeks to help out and by then I was okay taking care of them on my own.
