cabinet locks

We are slowly baby-proofing the house as DS becomes more mobile.  What kind of cabinet locks / latches do you like?

We would mostly use them on lower kitchen cabinets.

Re: cabinet locks

  • We have the locks that allow you to open the cabinet just a little, and then you push down on the plastic peice to open it all the way. I would NOT get those. Henry figured them out pretty quickly. Spend the extra money on the magnet locks, especially for the "dangerous/chemical" cabinets. Have fun!

  • We just moved last weekend and the new house (which was occupied by little kids before) has the magnet locks. I LOVE them - doors can't be opened at all without the "key," meaning there is no potential for pinched fingers from partially opened drawers (we had a few of those with our old locks).

These are the kind we have: https://www.amazon.com/Tot-Lok-9-Piece-Loc-Assembly/dp/B00068O28M/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1324481665&sr=8-6

ETA: that is not a great link because it's crazy expensive, but I think they can be found elsewhere (like home depot) for a lot less money. :)

  • We have slide locks. They are easy to install, no tools required. They are on the outside and easy for adults to open but not even 2 1/2 year olds can open it.

  • We have the magnetic tot locks on cabinet doors, and the cheapie push down plastic "locks" on drawers.  We only had to install the later recently as before he wasn't tall enough to reach many of the drawers.

The magnetic lock is great but I do have a couple of warnings:

    1. it is EASY to lose the "key".  We've had it cling to a metal mixing bowl, which then got put away in the cabinet.  There is practically no way to get in to a locked door without the key (we had to remove a drawer above the cabinet and unlock the door from the inside)

    2. The key is a very, very strong magnet.  VERY. And technically speaking, it is a choking hazard.  Magnets are about the worst things kids can swallow, so be very careful where you store it.

All that said we're happy with the system, but we're very cautious about where we store the key.
