January 2012 Moms

Well, the rings are staying on...

Anyone else not take rings off their fingers and now it is too late?  I'm not sure if I could get them off if I tried... (well, I have tried...)  hopefully I can wear jewelry during labor?  Maybe tomorrow I'll try soaking them in cold water or something... any other suggestions?

  • Have you tried vaseline, butter, or cooking oil? It'll make your ring gross but you can always soak it after. Good luck!

  • You can also wrap some floss around your finger just long enough and tight enough to slip your rings off. If you swell too much around the rings, they'll cut them off.

  • About two weeks post partum with DS, I shoved mine on my finger. SO dumb! I didn't realize you still have periods of swelling after having baby. I got mine off with soaking them in ice water and then coating them in butter. It took a good 1/2 hour.

But before that: I really freaked when I almost got them to the knuckle and the top of my finger started freakishly swelling and turning purple. It got really hot, I thought we were headed to the emergency room! I just worked the rings back down and called my mom. Ice and butter is what she suggested and it worked! I steered clear from my rings until 12 weeks post partum.

  • I had to lube mine up like crazy with soap one night to slide them off, and it hurt like a mother. My OB told me to go ahead and leave them off at this point because if they were stuck and I needed a c/s they may need to be cut off.

These are really good ideas. Cold water might also work, since it should shrink your fingers up just enough.

I test my rings each morning to make sure they still come off easily. As soon as it's a struggle, off they'll stay!

  • Mine came off when I noticed it starting to dig into my finger.  I just put it on a necklace I wear all the time so I know where it is.  Plus I'm technically still a newlywed, so I want so show it off. :P

This is what I do, too. I still wear them most of the days but this morning for example they were really tight so I left my engagement ring at home and am only wearing the thin wedding band. I have the feeling this will be it until baby is born...

  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions!  I sprayed windex on my finger, went into the cold garage and held a bag of frozen strawberries above my head.  In a few minutes I was able to get the rings off by twisting them off one at a time and spraying some more windex.  It was a little uncomfortable but well worth it and I found a different ring I have that is quite a bit bigger that I'll use for the last few weeks.

I just imagined someone walking in on this scene and the chuckle they would get out of it :) But I am glad it worked!
