Baby food fail?

I made my first batch of food last night...carrots!  I used my Ninja to make the food, and was disappointed how I had to keep taking the top off and scraping the carrots off the side.  And, I didn't get them as smooth as I'd like.  Maybe when they are thawed, they'll be a little thinner/smoother???  It made me feel stupid...I thought making baby food wouldn't be hard at all.  Maybe I need a different processor or something.  Any tips?

  • You might want to make it thinner - I would probably add a dash of apple or orange juice, makes it a little smoother :)

  • You can add a little water to thin in out. With everything but carrots I used the juice left over from cooking. You don't want to do that with carrots so I used bottled water. Or you can mix BM or formula when you thaw it.

  • I think you should wait until actually using it to thin it out to the consistency you want, because if you freeze it, it might thaw a little thicker anyhow.

  • Yeah carrots need a lot of water added. I wouldn't add juice or anything like that. I also would add a little bit of butter- the fat in the butter helps the nutrients absorb.
  • I am pretty sure carrots are a no-no for home made baby food because of the naturally occuring nitrates in them.  Try squash or sweet potatoes.

Steaming is ok as long as you don't use the water you cooked them with.  Here is a site that gets down to the details: https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/nitratearticle.htm

Yeah, I remember that, too, from when I thought about making baby food for G.  But, from what I've read, it's ok to, as long as you don't use the water.  I am definitely doing squash and sweet potatoes soon...just wanted to use up the massive amount of carrots DH bought at the grocery.  :)
