C-sections

Scheduled Sections

So I had a c-section with my first son, not scheduled, happened because I was induced and things didn't progress. I had an epidural. I know for a scheduled c-section they do a spinal instead. Anyone have both and feel that it was at all different or was it basically the same? Someone told me that the recovery after a spinal takes longer, like it takes longer to be able to feel your legs. I guess in all honesty I don't remember how long it took me to really move my legs the first time since I had my son at night so by the time I got to my room I was moved to my bed and passed out for the night and by morning I was able to get up. Thanks for sharing :)

Re: Scheduled Sections

  • I could be totally off but I think the difference involves two things. The first is that the medication is placed in a different space in the two procedures. Also an epidural involves placing a catheter that gives the ability to place more as needed while a spinal is a one time deal... I think. I only had a spinal for my c/s and it started wearing off in recovery. By the time I was wheeled up to my room about 2 hours after surgery, I believe I had almost all sensation back and could move my legs and hips. In fact I think I remember them testing that before I was allowed to my room.

  • I had a scheduled c/s with DS1 with a spinal and an unsuccessful VBAC that ended in a c/s and an epidural with DS2.

I have to say, I like the spinal better.  It did take a little while longer to wear off.  I remember after DS2 was born being surprised at how quickly I had movement back in my legs.  I don't really have any concept of time with either one, but it was definitely much quicker with the epidural.

The reason that I liked the spinal was because with the epidural, I shook terribly and I could feel the tugging and pulling sensations that everyone talks about.  With the spinal I had zero shaking and didn't feel a thing. I had to ask several times if they had even started yet.  Also, with the epidural, my BP plummeted a bit in the OR and I needed meds to help that.

  • I've had both and I liked the spinal better. I think it went into effect faster and I felt much better during the c/s. I don't know how long it took each time to be able to move and feel my legs but it didn't bother me. I was up and moving much better after the spinal too.

  • I loved my scheduled c-section...  I felt my recovery time was a lot shorter.  After a few hours, I was moving my legs, but I only got to get up the next day because I still had the catheter on.  It may also be because I wasn't in labour for 18 hours this time and I wasn't tired when I got in the OR...  I was also less groggy this time.

Hope everything goes well for you!

  • I haven't had my scheduled section yet... but at the very least I think the recovery will be easier just for the fact that I won't also be recovering from hours of intense labour and pushing at the same time! I'll be in a much better mental state since it won't be an emergency situation too.

  • I had a scheduled c/s and a spinal and never lost sensation in my legs. My anesthesiologist explained that he'd be careful of the amount he gave me because he wanted me to be able to move afterward. And there was the option of getting more if needed. It was great, I didn't even feel tugging in my abdomen but was able to use my legs no problem, which I think is why I was able to get moving so fast afterwards.

  • I don't remember there being a huge difference. I think the spinal may have lasted a little longer. The only major thing was that I was SO itchy my CS! The doctors said that it was pretty normal but they could give me meds if it got too bad.

Oh one other thing I didn't like about the spinal was that they gave it to me in the OR. It was freeeezing and I was shivering and shaking so bad, plus it was tickling while the anesthesiologist was trying to find the right spot on my back and trying to keep my back rounded was so hard. I'm kind of a baby about shots though. :)

  • Mine was not scheduled..so I had epi and they just used that. The shaking was bad and I could also feel a lot of pressure, not fun. I might have opted for a spinal if it was a planned surgery. It was nice to be able to stand a few hours after surgery, though.
