Twin newborn photos - questions

How old were your babies when you did them... w/ DD, the photographer said w/in 7 days, or she wouldn't be roly poly enough to get good pics. But if the twins come early and are a little premature, I would think I would have a little longer?

Also, did you go to the studio or have the photographer come to your home? Is it do-able to go to a studio?

TIA!

Re: Twin newborn photos - questions

  • The hospital I delivered at had a photographer that came to the hospital and took pictures.  My girls were in the NICU, and they didn't do pictures until they were about to be released.  Since one of my girls was released before the other, we didn't do them until the 2nd one was going so she wouldn't have her NG tube.  They were about 16 days old.  They were still really little, and still very roly poly

  • We did them at around 3 w (38 w gestational) and they were fine. We could have done it even later.
  • I would try to do them within the first 2 weeks after they are born, if they are in the NICU I would try to do them ASAP when they come home. Some  babies are sleepier and can be posed longer than others..you just never know. I would take my babies to a studio if it was a private photographer....I would never take my baby/ies to olan mills etc (places with lots of kids in and out). Most good newborn photographers will spend at least 2 hours with your baby....longer with twins!

  • Mine were in the NICU 10 and 13 days. We planned to do them at 15 days, but when one was delayed coming home, we waited until the next weekend. They ended up being 21 days old, and it worked out fine. I'd also have someone come to your home. It was much less stressful.

  • I think they try and do them in the first 7 days to take advantage of the babies' sleepiness.   That being said, we did ours when they were 9 days old, they definitely werent as sleepy and the pictures took 7 hours (yes you read that right)!   Luckily the photographer was my best friend so she was very patient, and we got some good shots =)     I definitely wouldnt want to go to a studio because it may take a while to get both babies calm, and you will possibly have to take feeding breaks, usually studios only want you there for a short period of time.

  • Mine were almost a month old. They were born at 34 weeks and were in the NICU for 2 weeks, we did them a week after they came home and they turned out perfect!

The photographer came to our house, there was no way I was loading them up and going to a studio for 1/2 the day at that point!

  • The boys were 3 weeks old when we got them taken.  They spent 1 week in the NICU, so that gave us a little transition time.

  • 8 days old, but K had major gas and reflux issues and we had no idea what it was at that point, so she screamed a lot of the time and we were there 3 hrs!  It was kind of a nightmare, but the pictures came out great!

  • Ours were born at 37w3d.  We did them at 8 days.  I think she wanted to get them in by 14 days because that's about when they wake up and get less poseable and sleepy.

Mine broke out in baby acne the next day, so it was perfect timing.

  • We had ours taken at our home, but I can't remember how old they were. I think it was under two weeks and it took about 5 hours.

  • We didn't do them until the girls came home. They were about 7-8 weeks old at that point, but they were so tiny it didn't matter.

  • We didn't do them. We have about a million pictures we personally took, but we didn't do the professional ones. The boys were in NICU and they wouldn't take the pictures until right before discharge. If we wanted to get a picture of the two of them together, they said they could, but it would have to be before Ian was discharged and Jack had the CPAP tube in at the time and you couldn't even see his face. Hospital policy doesn't allow children into the NICU from outside during flu/RSV season, so once Ian left NICU, he wasn't allowed in. So we just opted to skip them. I don't really miss them either, we have amazing documentation of their first few weeks of life.
