Two Under 2

XP: Diaper Bag Opinion

As of April 2012 I'm going to have two little boys under 2 (in cloth diapers) and am on the hunt for a very organized diaper bag that is large enough for numerous cloth diapers and liners.

I saw this video review of a large travel backpack and think the organization is amazing, but my DH thinks it's too big.  What is your opinion?  It wouldn't really be used for quick errands, but more so for long days out at the zoo, visiting GMs house, etc...

If you think it's too big, do you have other recommendations? Thanks so much!!

(PS: I XPd on the CD board too)

Re: XP: Diaper Bag Opinion

  • My opinion (although plenty will disagree with me) is that a back pack isn't the way to go with 2 small kids.

A back pack isn't easily accessible while carrying it.

I often times need to to be able to get inside my bag quick to grab something and rarely had more than 1 hand to do so - so anything that HAD to be zipped shut was out (usually requires 2 hands).  Messenger bags were out (couldn't get inside quickly and had to be able to fold back the flap).

What worked well for me was something with a magnetic closure so I could either reach in with it "closed" or pop it open easily and dig all the way to the bottom if need be while it was still on my shoulder and while my other hand was occupied with either holding the toddler's hand or carrying the infant carrier.

Picture yourself walking thru a crowded place with 2 kids in tow and needing something quickly because one of them (or both) is screaming.  Then picture needing to get inside your bag.  You often need to stop to remove the bag from your back which would require releasing both hands/arms to get it off your back hence you need to let go of both kids.  Again both hands needed to undo the zipper.

The nature of a back pack doesn't lend itself nicely to one handed use IMO.

It also looks like you have to lay it flat to get it all the way open to access the diaper changing stuff.  Most public bathrooms won't have a good place to do that and you're likely to have to lay the whole back of that bag down on nasty public bathroom floors.  It is HUGE and just doesn't look like an easy bag to quickly grab things out of.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • I also CD, and I carry my regular diaper bag with one diaper for DD and 2 for DS, and if it's more than a quick trip I pack a canvas tote with extra diapers.  When I'm running errands and am in and out of the car I just restock diapers as I go.  This has worked really well for us and keeps my diaper bag manageable.
