Breastfeeding

long night time feeding (1-2hrs)

I started out with low supply and was supplementing early on.  Now I am mostly bfing and morning are great. My breasts are full and DS is very happy and satisfied.  Evenings are a different story.  DS starts nursing around 8 pm and usually goes to sleep at 10pm. He seems frustrated (grunts and even cries sometimes). He switches back and forth between boobs.  I am not sure if his tummy is getting full at night.  I hope he is not starving. Does this happen to anyone else?  What should I do?  Should I pump a bottle earlier in the day and give that to him after I feed him at night?

  • It's cluster feeding. A lot of babies do it in the evening hours to "tank up" for the night so they can sleep a longer stretch. It doesn't mean he's not getting enough. Just keep nursing.

This! There is an article on Kelly Mom about cluster feeding and it really changed my breastfeeding relationship with DD. Just keep nursing!

  • Sounds like cluster feeding to me, some babies just like to nurse all evening for food and comfort. Ds used to do that too.
