Breastfeeding

breastfeeding and pumping questions

I am new to breastfeeding and pumping and have a few questions.  After you breastfeed and your breasts hurt is that the milk coming in again?  How many times a day should you pump?  How long after breastfeeding should you pump?  Is it ok to pour some of the extra from a bottle into a new bottle you are pumping? Thanks for your help.

  • I'm not sure what you mean about your breasts hurting. What kind of pain is it? Is it during a feeding or after? How long after? If it's during a feeding it may be letdown. If it's a few hours after a feeding it could be engorgement.

At this point, try not to worry too much about pumping. Are you planning on going back to work? Let baby establish your supply and just nurse as much as possible. If you are going back to work and need to build up a stash try just pumping once per day about an hour after a feed. You'll get the most if you pump in the morning when your prolactin (the milk-making hormone) levels are highest.

As far as combining milk, don't mix milk from a bottle your baby has already drunk from. During feeding, bacteria from the baby's mouth gets into the bottle and would then spread to the new milk. If baby doesn't finish a bottle you have to dump the leftover after and hour or so if baby doesn't finish it.

  • After I breastfeed my breasts hurt, its not very painful.  Its like 15 minutes after they're emptied.  I just thought it was them filling back up.  I'm only pumping right now because my husband wants to form a bond with the baby as well.  He wants to feed the baby too, and I am freezing some milk for over the holidays.

  • Everything pp says. Also since your already pumping just pump when LO would regularly eat. If you are going back to work I would pump 1hour after LOs morning feeding and freeze that. It going to take a few days to regulate your milk production.

  • This early on it's normal for your breasts to hurt and feel full a lot of the time. I would be careful of pumping too much this early because it can cause over supply issues which makes it hard for your baby to nurse. As far as dh wanting to feed lo too its normally suggested that you don't give bottles until the first month is over so that you don't cause nipple confusion and end up with latching problems with your baby. My dh never fed our son until he was 11 weeks old and they bonded just fine he used times like diaper changes, cuddle time, and bath time to bond with baby with out making breast feeding harder for us.

Just my unsolicited opinion, but if you're only pumping right now to give DH bonding time I would quit and let him bond in other ways.  Have him give the baby a bath, read the baby a story, do tummy time with the baby.  Pumping this early can mess with your supply and could make breastfeeding more difficult if LO decides the bottle is easier to drink from.

All of this. There are tons of ways for your partner to bond with LO. Bottle feeding this early can cause problems. It's really best to stick with only breastfeeding for the first few weeks. I can count on one hand the number of times DH has given DS a bottle in ten months, and they are very well bonded.

I get the same feeling sometimes after feeding.  Not super painful but a strange feeling.  I always thought it was them filling back up.  Glad to hear someone else is feeling the same thing!
