Christmas Dinner
I know this has been asked before but I can't find it. What are you making/having for Christmas dinner. It will only be 5 of us so I don't want to do a huge Thanksgiving type of meal. What are you having?

We do a Christmas Eve meal (MIL and BILs/SILs join my parents) and then we do a Christmas meal at my MILs.
Christmas Eve:
tenderloin
garlic mashed potatoes
some sort of veg, maybe brussel sprouts?
I don't know the rest after that. I'm all about meat & pototoes.
I can tell you that we're NOT having white chocolate raspberry cake.
Christmas:
ham and I don't know what else.
I'll answer for my side of the family bc I don't like what we eat at DHs family's house
Red meat--prime rib or filet mignon
twice baked potatoes
green beans
spinach salad
yummy bread
desserts
Christmas Eve- Seafood Gumbo
Christmas Day- Roast or Brisket with various rotating side dishes.
this year, my MIL wants to do a random assortment of heavy apps for Christmas Eve. She told me this is what the plan is:
tamales, stuffed mushrooms, pioneer woman's olive cheese bread, shrimp cocktail, roasted root veggies & flan.
On Christmas day, I think it's turkey, dressing, green beans, & mashed potatoes....and that night it will be leftovers + tamales
My family does traditional: turkey, green bean casserole, dressing, rolls and every dessert you can imagine.
DH's family (where we'll be) does tamales and chili on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day we'll do leftover and lots of apps and snacks.

Christmas Eve: appetizer buffet--it's a tradition from both my and DH's families
Christmas: Turkey, dressing, au gratin potatoes, creamed spinach, rolls, pumpkin pie. I would rather have this dessert, but DH loves him some pumpkin pie and I can't turn down his puppy dog eyes.

Rouladin (sp?). It's a German dish where you fry bacon and onions and wrap it up in a thin slice of steak and then cook it in gravy. I CAN'T WAIT. I think we'll have mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls, and dessert with it. I'm pretty much just going to eat Rouladin til I pop and not worry myself over all that other food. Who wants to waste room on side dishes?
ETA: Here is a recipe, in case you are interested. We leave the pickles out. (Evidently that's a Southern Germany thing.)
For realz. DH's birthday dinner request trumps everything else.
WTH? Who complains about dinner at someone else's house? I'd stick to lasagne and let her bring whateverthehell she wants.
We are doing Swedish style:
little hotdogs
meat balls
ham (coated with mustard and breadcrumbs served with really strong mustard)
pickled herring (not for me)
cold cuts
head cheese (not for me)
apple sauce
salty pickles (dill for me)
boiled potatoes
Janssons temptation (a rich gratin with potatoes, onions and cheese)
usually you have a flat crisp bread you eat the ham with for days after, you make an open sandwich with mustard, apple sauce, ham and pickles. yum.

Christmas Eve will probably be my momma's tamales (yum!) along with beans and rice. Christmas day will be turkey with all of the traditional sides that go with it.

ladies, if I only had the time to share all of the baffling the stories I have...
She's coming from houston tomorrow, so she's not bringing anything. And today she told me she hasn't purchased anything for SIL's stocking "So if you could just up some things for that. Thanks".
And I'm not sure how many of you remember the birthday cake debacle from 2009. It was epic. And as another birthday draws closer (and we'll be with her this year) my stomach is turning every time I think of it.

Christmas- prime rib roast, ham, green beans, brussel sprouts, sweet potato gratin
Wait, she's asking for you to do her Christmas shopping for her? Is this her daughter or DIL? Not that it matters, but that would get a big WTF and HELL NO-do your own effing shopping, from me.
dude she just insulted the crap out of my Italian mom-mom. They have lasagna, meatballs, pasta, salad, bready pizza(it's this amazing foccacia bread with a thick tomatoe topping and no cheese) and then desserts...

Thanks. I thought it would be awesome... but this is going to be one of these "not worth it" moments in MIL and my relationship. I'm going to make the f'ing turkey on Christmas Eve and not cause the waves. There will bigger fish to fry in our relationship as time goes on. I'm learning as the years go on just to not include people in MY decisions... because they are mine. I don't need her stamp of approval. Because (obviously) when I don't get it - it's upsetting. So, from now on... Eat what I make, or you're welcome to have cereal attitude at my house.

*hugs* Sorry your MIL is a toot, but sounds like a good plan for the future.
Well, we're ordering a fried turkey from hoover's and having that Christmas Eve while it's still hot. Have no clue what we'll do for Christmas day. I guess leftovers. The in-laws had been talking about getting a honey baked ham but the last time I got one my parents weren't blown away by it.
