nsaifr: Anyone live in/ near the Gulf Coast?

We go to an event every year that will be at a resort on the Gulf Coast of Alabama in 2012 (a different city every year).  We left the kids with my family this year and, while they were happy to, it was a *lot.*

I'm wondering if it could possibly work to make a vacation out of it, invite my family (or at least my mom) to watch the kids during the event, and say for several more days.

The question is - it's the last weekend of October.  Would it be too cold to enjoy the beach?

I've googled the average temperatures and it seems too cool, but it's hard to tell.  It seems like it would definitely be nice enough to enjoy being outdoors - but if I'm going to invite my family for a vacation, they're going to want to "beach it," kwim?  (Not that sweltering temps are needed/ expected, but the ability to put on a bathing suit and perhaps go to the pool.)

  • I grew up on the Florida Gulf Coast and it will almost certainly be too cool for you to be on the beach or in the Gulf at that time of year. Sorry!

ETA: That said, I looooove that area in the fall. It is defnitely not sunbathing weather, but it is the perfect time to throw on a sweater and sit out on a chair at the beach and read a book.

  • Yup, too cold.  I assume you're going to Gulf Shores or Fort Morgan?  Both are nice, but too cold to enjoy the beach.
  • We went to Gulf Shores last year in mid-October.  The gulf water is too cold to get into, though we did go walking through the edge with shorts/capris on.  It was fine to go to the indoor pools, but the outdoor ones at our hotel (one of the Phoenixes) was not heated and was way too cold.  The temperature was great for going around town and eating outdoors though.  Sitting on the beach was fine too.
