it just feels like a cervical check but painful rather than uncomfortable. Luckily it only lasts a few seconds if your doc is good. Every doc is different for when they will do it- mine won't until you're 40 weeks, which is fine with me! He'd given me a stat that 60-75% of women go into labor within 72 hours of a membrane sweep but I can't state his source.
I had mine swept with DD a few days before I was 40w but went into labor on the 4th day. So for me it didn't work. I doubt I'll have them do it this time and just let my body progress on it's own unless something different comes up.
I don't know what it feels like because I declined yesterday. If he comes on his own we'll be pumped but we decided we'd like to spend this last week together just being us, if possible. Going to movies, running around, and I'd like to not be expected to be hauling a brand new baby around on Christmas Day.
I'm 38 weeks tomorrow and she offered. We'll see how I feel at my next appointment!
I may have a higher pain threshold than others, but I didn't find it to be that painful. It's just a lot of pressure. I just did my breathing exercises while she did it with LO #1 and it was over in no time. I wasn't screaming in pain or anything. I believe you have to be at least 1 cm dilated in order to do it.
My doctor says it will either put you in labor within 24 hours or it will do nothing. I had mine done twice with LO #1. The first time was 40w3d and it did nothing, then I had it done again at 40w6d when I went in for my induction. I was in labor within 6 hours after she did it.

I'm obviously not requesting one this early, since I'm only 37 weeks, but I've heard a lot of people talking about it!
