I need some advice! (not pregnancy related)

This is bugging the HECK out of me! Our house is always clean! We take the trash out regularly, don't leave food out, nothing. But we are having a serious problem with fruit flies. Not so much flying around, but I keep finding them dead in the bottem corner of my refrigerator (and our refrigerator is always clean! No old food, nothing). I don't understand where they are coming from! It's grossing me the heck out and making me not want to eat any of the food in my fridge. What do I do? How do I make them go away? I HATE bugs, this is disgusting! Help me! :(

  • It doesn't have to be old food, I think they just like any fruit or veggies left out. We get them occasionally and I make sure to wrap stuff up in paper bags for a little while until they move on.

I also have been known to amuse myself by vacuuming them up. Its kind of fun when they are flying around. Heh.

  • If you live on base, call housing maintenance.

In the short term, try wiping everything down with white vinegar.  Do you have a garbage disposal?  Could something be decaying in there?  Check under the black rubber flap thing to make sure that's clean.  Do you know how to check your refrigerator seal?  Use a piece of paper or a dollar bill to see if it falls out when the door is shut.  Things shouldn't be able to get in and out of a closed fridge.

  • We had them pretty bad in the fall.

I'm not sure since you are finding yours dead, but if you see some flying try to mix a little dawn dish soap, some vinegar and water in a cup. I used to find so many dead in that mixture.

They also like orange juice, so if you leave a cup of that out you'll find a bunch dead in there.

  • My Mom gets them seasonally (she lives on the Chesapeak Bay in MD) along with all her other neighbors.  It might be environmental.  I know she does put some crazy mixture in a bowl, covers the bown with plastic wrap and pokes wholes in it so they can get in (they like the mixture) but can't get out.  Good luck!  My Moms issue lasts a month or two and then goes away.  I hope yours gets done soon!

  • We had an issue with them 2 summers ago in our garbage disposal.  To catch them, I sliced up some lemons, put them in a glass and cover it with saran wrap, then poke some holes in it.  Then grind up the rinds in the garbage disposal with some ice.  Worked pretty well for us.
  • My grandmother has always taught me to leave a glass of red wine on the table or counter when you leave for work. It works for me.
