Sleep Training.

I was just wondering on what were some good recommendations for books on sleep training. I am not trying to start a debate or anything but I feel I need to educate myself on some of the ways to sleep train, in particular putting LO down awake so she can soothe herself to sleep. Thanks.

Re: Sleep Training.

  • I've read them all...the best ones I found in terms of actual information on sleep habits is Ferber's book (Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems) and Weissbluth's Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child.

  • I agree with Cougar in terms of who has the best actual sleep info. Also check out the Sleep Lady (Kim West, I think). The bottom line of all the books is to be on a schedule/have a bedtime routine and let the kid cry (sometimes alone, sometimes with you nearby) so that after a week he/she will not wake you at night (IMO that doesn't mean that the baby is actually sleeping - I've been meeting more and more families where the baby is actually awake for portions of the night but just don't call for their parents). You have to re-train babies whenever there is a change of schedule and when they stop STTN (which apparently they sometimes do). Everyone - including Ferber - says that they outgrow it regardless of what you do. Research on the long term effects of CIO shows that there are no differences in the sleep patterns of babies who cried and babies who didn't.

  • Ok thanks. Whenever we get her down usually around 930 she stays asleep until 730 the next day, so STTN isn't an issue. Right now we are still having to rock to her to sleep instead of just laying her in her crib so she can fall asleep on her own. Thanks for the help ladies!

Bahhh if this were us I would not mess with a beautiful, beautiful thing!

How long do you have to rock her before she goes to sleep? Is it a struggle or you just want her to fall asleep on her own? If it's not a struggle, why even bother sleep training? Most of the sleep training books are about sleep PROBLEMS. 10 hours isn't a problem IMO. She will fall asleep on her own eventually. She's still a baby.

eta: totally not what you asked at all. Feel free to ignore me! I'll just be here, drooling over 9:30-7:30... lol

I agree with HonkyTonk. I will also drool away over 10 hours of sleep.

But, what most of the books suggest is either to let the baby cry or to slowly put her down more and more awake each night.

  • My LO's problem was the rocking too...he did not STTN but I could just put him back to sleep in the middle of the night so that was never a problem for me. However, going to sleep at night and all naps were a rocking nightmare - he'd wake up the second we put him down and then we'd have to start all over. I was losing my mind. I read several books (Ferber, HSHHC, and one other I forget) and found extinction method with HSHHC to be the best one for solving the issue of him falling to sleep on his own. I started with nighttime sleep first. I was amazed at how textbook JT was - it took him 20 minutes of crying, groaning, singing, whatever to fall asleep. Naps were harder for us.
