Hi guys I just got back from the hospital. I noticed some light brown discharge on my panties and after I wiped right before I started working out at gym( thankfully I went BEFORE my workout). Went to ER, and lo and behold I was also having contractions- they said about 4-5 every hr. They gave me two pills, it didnt work---then finally a shot and the last hr I was there I only had one contraction. Now Im home and I take this anti contraction med every 4 hrs. There was only the RN there to speak to, she wasnt very helpful in providing information. She said if they pick up to call her again, the thing is I didnt know earlier I WAS having contractions until I started to lay down and I felt like acid was being spilled on my uter. However, the last hr I was there I thought I had 3 in 30 min and she said only one that last hr. So I have NO CLUE how I will even know if Im having contractions.
I wasnt dialated which was good. Did anyone else go through this? Does this mean I may deliver early? What causes these? A bit nervous and my hub will be traveling all week
Re: Contractions at 27 wks-help!
If it were me, as soon as you can, I would be calling to speak with your doctor or his N.P. (nurse practitioner) and tell them what happened and see if they can assist you a little better with your things of what not to do.
From what I've heard from friends of mine that had cases similar to this, they were put on bedrest or light duty. Try to keep from being stressed out, lifting heavy things, even working out. If you do work out work out lightly No heavy walking etc.
As for knowing the difference in the contractions some women have 'menstral cramp' type pains, or back pains. So if it's anything like that you need to try and watch for it. Even if they are every few hours apart. At least you know that they weren't BH. I'm sorry you had to go through this. It's a bit scary. But I would def. contact your doctor or someone within his office and see what they suggest. GL!
So you went to an actual hospital and were having documented contractions at 27 weeks and an OB didn't see you??? That is just crazy.
I'm an RN and there is NO WAY I would have felt comfortable discharging a patient with contractions and spotting without an MD assessment...
Defintely call your doctor ASAP and let them know what happened.
Yes, went to hospital and the montior on my belly was showing 4/5 an hr. The dr spoke to the RN via phone along the way. It must be the protocal at this hospital- I called my dr before I went, the dr on call in his office was the one the RN was speaking to. Its a great hospital in N Cal, but I too was surprised I didnt see a dr
They did give me discharge notes to take the meds every 4 hrs, go back if contractions continue over 8 hrs and to take it easy (no working out, shopping etc). Then to follow up w my dr on Monday.
This pregnancy is my first and literally every other wk its been one stress or another
Why do people have contractions early?
There are lots of reasons for preterm contractions, most are fairly common issues like dehydration, a UTI, even a yeast infection gone untreated can cause contractions. Also some women do experience more painful and noticeable Braxton Hicks than others. In other cases it can be a sign or symptom of actual preterm labor. As long as the contractions aren't causing any cervical change and you are able to function through them it may just be that you have uterine irriability. Just watch out for any additional signs of PTL, like spotting/leaking/ vaginal pressure with the contractions/increase in frequency or intensity or sudden changes in bowel movements.
In my case I have a history of preterm labor and with this pregnancy I started having documented contractions (about 5-7mins apart) at 19 weeks. I was placed on oral terbualtine which didn't work and then switched to procardia. However at that point my contractions were "just" contractions and since I had not made any cervical change I wasn't considered "in PTL", when I hit 24.5 weeks however I knew something wasn't right because the contractions became WAY more intense, I started feeling vaginal pressure and I had diarrhea (a sign of PTL), I went to L&D triage and they discovered that I was contracting through the procardia every 2 mins, I was 1-2 cm dilated and 50% effaced and my cervix had went from 4.45cm at 21 weeks to 1.9 cm at 24 weeks with substanial beaking and funneling and my bag of water is literally sitting inside the "beaked" part of my cervix. I spent a week in the hospital on STRICT bedrest, got steroid injections for baby, P17 injections and antibotics, after a week I hadn't dilated any further or ruptured so they sent me home on meds, bi-weekly check ups with ultrasounds and cervical measurements, and STRICT bedrest.
I'm sorry you've had a stressful pregnancy, just try to take it easy and hopefully you will start feeling better soon
