False Positive For Gonorrhea?

I had my first doctor's appointment on Monday, and just got a call today saying that one of my two tests came back positive for gonorrhea. They said they only way to get it is through sexual contact with an infected person. I have only ever been with my husband, and he has only been with me for the past 6 years. I asked if it can lay dormant and then pop up but they answered no, so that would mean it would have to have been contracted recently. I know my husband has been faithful, so please no comments about him cheating... She said that of the two tests, vaginal and one other (not sure but I would assume urine, however she just called it a gonorrhea test) only the other one showed positive. The vaginal swab was negative which she seemed to think was odd. She said that it could have been a false positive, and I am going in to get retested on Friday.

I am wondering if anyone else has had a false positive for gonorrhea. The nurse couldn't tell me how common it is to get false positives. I am very hopeful that it is false, as I have no idea where it would have come from. My husband is military and gets tested for STDs a couple times a year. In fact he just did about 2 months ago, and there was nothing. So we aren't sure where it would have come from if it is a correct positive.

I am at a loss for words, I'm sick to my stomach, and have an awful headache from crying. I don't know what to do. I am only 11 weeks pregnant and I'm scared to death. If left untreated for a period of time (which I have no idea how long i've had it, if i do) it can cause miscarriage, preterm birth, and blindness in the baby, as well as future ectopic pregnancies, or infertility!  Any advice or positive words would be much appreciated.

Re: False Positive For Gonorrhea?

  • It sounds like a false positive test.  If your husband is regularly tested, and faithfulness is not in question there is no reason to think otherwise.  I googled "gonorrhea false positive test" out of curiosity and a lot of info came up showing how common it is.  It sounds like a pretty good chance since only one of two tests came back positive.

I hope you can relax, it will be okay.

Thank you so much for the encouragement! After I calmed down a little I also googled and found the same thing after reading about 10 different links. lol. I also have talked to my husband and feel much better about it all. His faithfulness was never a question in my mind. And as soon as I told him what the nurse said he was scared I wouldn't believe him, which made me feel terrible! I trust him with everything I am. So I'm sure it's a false positive or a freak happening. If he did have anything it would be from 6 years ago. Which I don't think is possible after researching gonorrhea.

    Again, thank you!

  • My husband is military too, and said that they only do a regular HIV test, not a regular test for all std's.  He would have to specifically request a more extensive std test, and he would definitely know if he had the gonorrhea test because:

    For Men:
To test for gonorrhea in the penis, a swab is done from the urethra. Some men find this test uncomfortable, and it may sting when you urinate afterwards.

Maybe you should ask you husband to get tested just in case.. You can technically get gonorrhea without intercourse or direct sexual contact.  One would only have to come in contact with an infected person's sexual fluid. Good luck :)

Just in case you want to know where I got the above info from:

  • My co-worker got a false positive when she was pregnant a couple years ago.  She (rightfully) freaked out!  It was actually a little funny (she laughs now) because she is a super prude.

When she got the positive results she questioned us on what it was and how she could have gotten it-which is funny enough when she gets totally grossed out by any word meaning vagina, penis, sex, etc.  When she got the negative results in the mail she brought it in to show us!

  • I'm sorry you have to go through all that stress.  I would be freaking out.  Even though it seems like a false positive, I would probably get treated anyway.
