Thanks a bunch! Big Smile

Re: 2nd time moms, 2 questions plz :)

  • I never used a sling. I just carried her. 6 - 12 mos. Most people will get you newborn to 3mos.

  • I think 6-9 months was what I had the most of for DD, it all depends on how big your baby is though so I wouldn't buy a lot of anything until baby arrives.

     I had the Baby Bjorn.

Trying for baby #2 since May 2010. DX elevated prolactin. Clomid round 1-50mg=BFN. Clomid round 2-100mg = BFN. Began taking Cabergoline and prolactin levels regulated. July IUI#1= BFN. Break cycle for August and BFP on 8/26/11! Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker BabyFruit Ticker
  • Not sure about the clothing size.  I think DD was in 3-6 the longet.  Maybe?

I had the zolo sling that I liked.  But I loved the moby, but it's definitely not the easiest to use.   I also now have an ergo for  DD, I'm thinking about getting the infant insert for that and trying to use that.  Also, try asking the AP board for sling recs.

    This.

And I had a baby carrier, not sling.  I think I have an Infantino.  Good for if you're on a budget.

  • It all depends on how your DS grows.   Mine grew really fast at first and then slowed down about 5 months.   We ended up being in 9 month clothing from about 5 to 11 months.

As for slings, I didn't get one with my first but I would love to get a ring one with this one.   I did have the Moby and a Beco Butterfly II and I loved both.   The Moby was great until about 3 months so he could be snuggled right up to me.  My DH says the beco has been our best baby purchase.  Originally he was doubtful because it is pricey but he's been converted.   You can do a front or back carry in it and it goes up to 45 pounds.   I stll use it for back carries with my 20 month old toddler today, when I need to keep him close.  He still enjoys riding in it.

  • I say get some 6-9 and 9-12 months stuff.  Like pp said, people will buy you the little stuff.

I didn't use a sling last time but am going to this time.  I have something at home, but forget what it is now.  It's some sort of wrap sling, which I'm actually excited about using.  It'll be easier to have my hands free to deal with my toddler and still have LO close.

  • I wouldn't buy tons of anything until the baby gets here because it really depends on how big he/she is. :)

As far as baby carriers go, it depends on your preference. Stay far away from front facing carriers like the baby bjorn though, as the dangly legs promote bad hip development and poor circulation to the legs and groin (even when the baby is facing the mother in these carriers, the legs are still dangling with no support).

Most carriers you can't use right away anyway (unless you have an Ergobaby and also have the infant insert). I'd recommend trying a wrap or ring sling to start out with. Wraps can get complicated pretty easily though, but ring slings are super easy to use. Then if you like babywearing I'd upgrade to an Ergo or Beco or something like that, or even a mei tai (which is like the Ergo, but ties instead of snaps). I have the Ergo sport and it's been absolutely the best baby investment ever. I still use it for my 16 month-old to ride around on my back. If you're on a budget and don't want to buy anything without seeing if you like it first, www.granolababies.com will let you rent wraps, slings and carriers to see what you like best. :) That website is also pretty good about describing the difference between each type of carrier/wrap/sling and giving you the pros and cons of each.

Also, if you still have questions about babywearing, head over to the Attachment Parenting board and look around there.

    Good luck!

ETA: If you're not already watching babysteals.com, you DEFINITELY should. The Ergos pop up there every couple months or so. I got mine there for about half the price you'd normally pay. I've also seen a couple decent Infantino ones pop up there from time to time (the Balance and the EcoSash).

  • It honestly depends on the baby with the clothes i remember mine wore new born for about a month was in 3 months clothes for maybe 2 months and 6 months clothes for 2 months then pretty much pasted up 9months clothes straight to 12 months clothes by the time he was only 6 months old. Mine was also a boy with a high percenti and tall for his age. He was also breastfeed.

As for the sling i had a baby bjorn carrier and it was given to me but it seemed to work well

  • It's really difficult to say which size you should buy the most of since every baby is different.  For example, my son was in preemie clothes for a far longer period of time than any other size (preemie through 12 months).  But he was also almost 7 weeks early.  Once he started growing he blew through sizes like crazy.

I didn't have a sling - I used the Baby Bjorn carrier though and I loved it.

  • Well, for the first 3 months I pretty much had DD in onesies because it was so hot - and those are easy to wash and they don't get them too dirty (at least, DD didn't since she never spit up).

For me, 6-9 months is the age when you need the most.  They're crawling around, eating solids and just get so dirty.

For the sling, I really like the Baby Bjorn, but that's more of a carrier I guess?

  • As for clothing sizes, it will vary by baby. My son was 9 lbs at birth and wore newborn sizes for about 2 weeks. He flew threw 0-3 and 3-6 months sizes and spent more time in 6-9 and 9-12 month sizes. But some babies stay in smaller sizes for a much longer time. I don't think there's any way to predict it.

I did a lot of baby wearing and I liked the Moby wrap for the first few months, and I've heard the k'tan is good too. I have a babyhawk mei tai for a little later on, and an Ergo too. There are a lot of options and what you like will depend on your baby and your needs.

  • I would recommend not buying a lot of clothes. I know that is really hard. My son was in newborn for a LONG time. He had trouble gain weight due to severe allergies. I would say its rare for a child to be in newborn for as long as my son. I also have two friends that just had babies. with both boys they had to skip newborn and were only in 3 month for about a month. They don't have any appropriate clothing for the season, so now they are buying more clothes.

I didn't have a sling with my son. I am looking into the moby wrap this time.

  • I loved my Moby wrap. It is a little bit complicated at first but even my DH got the hang of it so it's really not too bad!

And honestly, the first year he grew so fast that there wasn't really one size that he was in the longest. I would just make sure you always have the next size up in case you dress the baby one day and realize the clothes don't fit!

  • Ella was in 6-9 month clothing the longest. I used a mei tai from etsy. For this baby I'll use that one and get a moby (they look awesome).  And I loved using my mei tai as a hip carrier for when she was a little bigger. It saved my arms and back.

  • I wouldn't pre buy much in the clothes department, except a few newborn things. There's no way to predict what size your kid will be in what season. DD stayed in 3-6 months until she was almost a year. She even wore preemie for a couple months even though she wasn't born too early (38 weeks).  Even now I don't buy too much ahead. She was in 18-24 months for almost a year then went up to 3t in 6 months.

If people give you clothes, DO NOT WASH THEM until they fit your LO. Otherwise you can't return them or get top dollar if you resell them. I washed almost everything and she didn't get to wear half of it because it was the wrong season when she was the right size for it.

I loved my ring sling, it made carrying DD hands free and I could get stuff done.(DH worked offshore so it was just me and DD mostly).

  • I wanted to add Baby legs were my favorite with my daughter and they are a one size thing. She crawled around in a onesie and babylegs for several months, then the progressed to just baby legs and a tank top when we were potty training. It's a good thing to buy if you are itching to shop!

  • As for clothes I honestly don't remember.  However, I didn't know the size "newborn" existed.  I always thought 0-3mos was for newborns.  I had a small baby (5lbs 15oz) and no newborn clothes.  Thankfully my grandma had sent me some.  I know everyone says not to waste your money, but DD wore them for 6 weeks. Well worth the small cost in my book.

I used a Moby type wrap with DD, and plan on using it again with this one.  The one I had was cool because it was custom. You could pick a patterned panel and then the color of fabric you wanted for the sides.
