Constipation

Leah has started to get constipated. She would really strain and cry when pooping. My sister's kids had the same issues and so they were on miralax for years. So I started giving Leah some daily until things got moving again..and now I'll just give her some if I notice her poops getting harder...so maybe twice a week. Has anyone else had to do this?? We never have had to give our kids medications (other than Motrin) so it is taking some getting used to.

Re: Constipation

  • Every once in a while Ian would get like that, so I typically just upped his fruit and water intake throughout the day (like really made sure he ate quite a bit instead of just eating a couple bites and walking away). Grapes and melon often seemed to work well.

  • our dr says to increase her P fruits.  that willl help her.  Poor sophia will scream sometimes.
  • Yeah the fruit thing didn't work for Leah :( she eats so much already..and I don't want to give her juice, but maybe I should try this once a week and drop a miralax dose.
  • Both my kids have always had issues with constipation, and we try to stay away from constipating foods (bananas, rice, etc) but it's tough.

DD - 2 years old - gets a ton of benefiber in her milk.  The pedi said to not limit the amount according to the container.. that it's about being safe and using common sense.  She gets it daily, and if I miss some - even if she's sick/has diarrhea - she gets really constipated.

DD - 4.5 - gets pedia-lax fiber gummies every day.  works great and she's almost on a 'schedule' for going #2.

They both go daily.. and it's important to me that they aren't straining or uncomfortable (like stopped up and gassy).  The pedi always said make sure they aren't constipated, especially when it comes to potty training.  You never want them holding in #2 because it could literally cause physical damage.

  • BTW, I wouldn't consider fiber a medication (if that makes you feel better!).  The pedi said that's another reason why you don't have to follow benefiber to a T.. fiber is just good for you, most people are lacking in fiber.  Even I take fiber supplements, not because I'm stopped up, but because it is so good for you - digestive, heart, etc.

We have tried everything from prunes to pears, but it was never enough.  DD has eczema too so it is often an issue there.  I have no problem with the Benefiber or gummies!

  • DD's had a difficult time with hard stools since she was about a year. I just make sure to offer her watered down prune or blueberry juice on a regular basis. I much rather she have juice than meds.

Kiwi, oranges and berries help a lot, too.

  • Rosie takes a half dose of Miralax every single day, ugh.  Without it she was holding her poop and would go once every 5-6 days.  We tried everything before the Miralax- increasing fruits, giving juice, prunes, cutting out all dairy products, nothing worked. Her pedi told me Miralax is not habit forming and her daughter has to use it too.  We are starting to lower the dose to see if we can, but we just don't know.  She's also on 3 fiber gummies a day, that could be a non-medicated option for you.
