Preemies

Born at 35 wks - Now 10 days old...

Hi Ladies. I have been over on 0-3 Mos but I have a question for you all. DD was born at 35 weeks (12/9) and is 10 days old today. We went in for her one week weight check today and she had lost 1 oz and the doctor said she was jaundice. She said her skin was really yellow. So she ordered a billirubin test and said we would see what they showed. She said she may need the lights or they may have to admit her. Well I just called and her billirubin came back 4.8 which isn't bad at all. I asked the nurse and she said nothing is wrong. Well why was the doc so concerned this am? I asked to talk to the doc but she was "with patients" of course. Now I'm worried though. Why would she be so adamant that she was jaundice and then her numbers come back fine? Anyone else have a yellow preemie that didn't actually have high billirubin levels?

Also, did your 35 weeker sleep a ton? DS was 39 weeks and I know he slept a ton but eventually would have longer and longer awake periods. She isn't usually awake for more than 20-30 minutes and she usually only has one or two periods like that a day. The rest of the day she snoozes away. She will wake up to eat but almost always falls back asleep while she's eating (though she does finish). Is this normal for preemies?

Sorry for all of the questions. TIA for all of your help. :)

  • Are they going to do another bili test?  Our pedi said that the test is actually pretty inaccurate but they're only looking for it to trend down.  DD was on the lights for a few days in the NICU and then they followed up with it at her appts.

You can try getting her in some sun, even through a window, for a little bit each day to help get it out.

I would definitely expect your DD to sleep a lot.  Even though she has been born, she's probably going to do a lot of things by her adjusted age, which is the age she would be at her due date.  My DD definitely slept a ton when she first came home.  She acted more like a typical newborn once she hit her EDD.

  • At 4.8 you would definitely see a yellow color to the eyes and face- that's probably what the doctor noticed and with preemies you start lights at lower numbers so better safe than sorry. Preemies definitely tend to be more sleepy. My guy didn't start to have longer awake peroids till 1 week or so past his due date. He now has two 1 hr stretches of playtime a day at almost 1 month adjusted. HTH!

  • Our 35 weekers both were jaundiced. The tolerance level is based on size, I believe. Our 5 lber was just watched, but our little one spent a lot of time under the lights even though her numbers were lower.

They were really sleepy until around 42 weeks gestational.

  • Thanks everyone! I wasn't expecting an early baby and she has me completely paranoid!!
