For those that work PT and/or don't have FLMA...

...are you nervous about taking maternity leave?  Do you think your job might be in jeopardy in this economy?

I have been working for my company PT for just over three years.  I have saved up seven weeks of sick time and will be taking all of it for maternity leave.  I have never gotten a bad review and I've talked to my boss and HR lady who says they are very happy with my work, but I can't help but be nervous.  We really need me to keep this job!

I was wondering if anyone else was thinking and feeling the same thing.

  • Could you bring it up with your boss? If they're happy with your work, I'd say don't worry, but that is easier said than done. You're taking time off that you've banked, so I'd hope that, plus your past work, would speak for itself.

  • I don't have FMLA, since I haven't been working for my employer for a year yet. I'm not worried about losing my position. It's a contract job, so basically, a super huge healthcare company has hired a staffing company to hire me.  The super huge healthcare company has already paid the staffing co through the end of my contract... so whether I'm here or not, I'm already paid for.  I doubt they'd kick me, since that would just mean hiring another contract employee, and spending more money. Plus, the super huge healthcare company is really wanting me to get hired internally. The whole contract deal is sort of their way of having a year-long interview with people straight out of college.

The thing I'm nervous about is getting enough time at home with my baby. 6 weeks isn't very long, although I am trying to work it out so that I can take 8 or 10, with a few weeks being part-time or somewhat from home.

Just make it very clear to your employer that you really value your job, and that you really see a future there. I'm not sure if they can fire you while you take your banked sick time... might be something to look into or ask about.
