Fourth Degree Tear

Hi Ladies....

I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy in May. He was a month early, but still almost 6 pounds, and me being super tiny, I ended up with a fourth degree tear. After everything was stitched up, something busted (still very unclear as to what all happened) and I ended up with an even further tear, emergency surgery and a blood transfusion. I had SEVERAL check ups with my doctor following the delivery, all during which she said I was healing perfectly and everything looked great, my last appointment being about 2 months after I gave birth.

Fast forward 4 months, and my husband and I have yet to attempt sex because I am PETRIFIED after everything that happened. I know it's not possible to "re-tear", but I am determined it's going to happen. Did anyone else have a similar experience? How did you get past it? I am SO nervous!! There is part of me that wants to go back to see my doctor AGAIN just for her to look it all over and give me the go ahead....again. But I know that's insane of me. I want to be intimate again, but the fear of further injury is holding me back. HELP!!!

Re: Fourth Degree Tear

  • I do understand you completely I also would have been petrified, because after you were all stitched up you tore again with no reason. So, as you said it sounds wired, but go to your ob gyn and get checked again! Overall I think if the doc tells you that everything is ok you will fell less scared and more confident.

  • Alcohol.

I only had a third degree tear, but it took some booze to get me back on the horse. And I won't lie, it hurt. It has gotten better with time, though.

  • I only had a third degree tear but then i didnt heal and left a skin tag.. i think thats what te dr said. the dr had to burn part of the tissue off but after that no problems. Definitely some alcohol in your system and make sure to use lube and take it slow. im not going to lie it hurt for awhile but it gets better

  • I had a second degree tear and even after the go ahead, with lots of lube and alcohol, it still HURT for months. We're still not back to normal, but we're close. Go slowly. Don't take on too much at once. Don't be discouraged if it takes a while before you're back to normal. It can be frustrating, but I take comfort in the fact that people have multiple children: it must be possible to get back on the horse (so to speak). Good luck!!
  • I had a fourth degree with some issues, and it took a few tries.  Alcohol and lube, just go slow.  I think we tried three or four times (once a week) before I was able to, and it still hurt.  Everything feels back to normal now, but if we go awhile without having sex it hurts at the very beginning.
  • I didn't have the challenges you have but it hurt.  My doctor recommended getting drunk.  It was his official prescription.  ;-)
