Saying goodbye to infant car seat + ?s

DD is jut about too tall for the infant car seat (she has half an inch left to go). I am having a really hard time accepting that we need to switch to the "big kid" car seat. Not just because it means that she's not a baby, but also because it means that she is less portable. We won't be able to drop her off asleep at grandma's and go out to dinner, if she falls asleep in the car on our way home we won't be able to just bring her in asleep (we live in an apartment building), I can't put her in the car seat so that she falls asleep and then finish getting ready before we go out. I feel like it's one of the big things that marks the transition from 'baby' to 'kid'.

But also...there are some logistics I need to figure out.

I read that you aren't supposed to put a kid in a car seat with a winter coat on. Do you? If not, do you just take your kids coat on and off every time you get out of the car?

What car seat do you have? We got a Britax on sale last year but we're going to need a second one 'cause we're not going to constantly switch one between our cars. MIL generously offered to get one for us as part of DD's birthday gift so we need to choose one.

You're not supposed to use big puffy coats. A pea coat, sweatshirt, etc is fine, but just one of those "puff" coats like Old Navy was selling. We're in the south so we haven't had this issue yet, but if/when it decides to get that cold, I plan on putting her in a sweatshirt, hauling azz to the car and then putting a blanket on top of her in the car seat. Once the heat kicks in she usually throws the blanket off of herself. This is what we did when she was a newborn and it worked well.

We have the Graco My Ride 65. It is truly the best bang for your buck. Great seat with great safety ratings and LO can RF up to 40 lbs and FF up to 65 lbs.

  • I live in NH - it is cold here!  There is no way I can prevent DS from having to wear a coat sometimes.  At The Childrens place we found a winter coat that is like a 3 in 1 so it is fleece or a fairly warm shell or both combined.  On the cool days he gets the fleece, on the cold days he wears the outer part.  It is not very puffy and I did not have to move his straps, if we are running errands this is what he wears, if we go on a long car he is just in his normal clothes, and maybe a blanket, depending on how warmed up the car is.

I also have the graco My Ride 65

  • Mine's been in a MyRide65 since she came home from the hospital.  The key to keeping her asleep when we move her is to lift her out onto a soft snuggly blanket draped across our chests, then quickly tip her over so she's horizontal with the blanket over her.  She'll stay asleep 9 times out of 10 this way, as long as she's really firmly asleep and not dozing.

We do layers instead of a bulky coat... a fleece jacket, then a sweater.

  • p's been in a convertible seat since he was 5 mns old, it was tough, not being able to keep him asleep if we needed to get out of the car. but he naps much better in the crib anyway so i have to really plan our trips out with him.

we do put him in a thinner fleece when it's cold, i'll throw a blanket on him but he doesnt keep it on long. then when we get out of the car we quickly throw a heavier coat on him.

and as for carseats- we have the britax advocate cs 70 (luckily we got it for an awesome price) but i'm not all that happy with it. p is a chunky boy & the crotch belt is super short so we always have to move his leg folds out of the way when we buckle him in, then the straps near his legs look like they dig into him. the carseat is also supposed to have shoulder belts that dont twist/bunch up behind them, etc (that's a load of c**p). i'm sure they all twist to a certain extent & that most people have to pull the shoulder straps out from behind their kiddos but i feel like we could have a similar carseat, just as safe, for a lot less. i am however, very pleased with the padding of the carseat, it seems much more comfortable than a lot of others i've looked at in stores.

  • Saying goodbye to the infant seat was sad...I'm amazed your LO still fits in it comfortably! Even with room to spare JT was just so much more comfortable when we switched (at about 5 months or 6 months I think).

We have the Britax Advocate. I like it a lot but it is big. I have a Honda Pilot and the passenger seat sits pretty close to the dashboard to allow for the seat. I'm sure it'll be much better once we switch it to FF but for now it'll do.

The coat thing is a huge PITA. He wears an heavy fleece jacket most days but on a day like today I have the puffy coat to put on him once I take him out of the car. From suggestions I had on here, I do wrap him in a heavy fleece blanket when running out to the car and leave it on him until car warms up...then he throws it off.

I have yet to take him out of the car seat while asleep without waking him. Today, I sat in my driveway while he finished his nap so I didn't have to wake him. He sleeps much much better in the crib so when possible I plan my day around his naps so he can sleep at home.

  • My LO been in the big girl car seat for 5 months already.  She stays sleeping when I pick her up out of her seat and carry her to the house.  Now that they are a lot more stable sitting and such they are not too bad to carry around shopping or whatever.

Yeah, it's really cold here.  She has a puffy coat that she wears when we go outside to play or take a walk or whatever, but she doesn't wear it in her car seat.  We have a fleece jacket or a peacoat for going in the car and like others have said I throw a heavy blanket over her getting to the car and then throw it off once we get in the car.

We have a Sunshine Kids XLT.  We chose it for its safety ratings and it's ability to fit in our car (alot more slender fitting, can fit three across)

  • The coat thing is true, as answered by PPs

We have a Safety first Air or something like that for DS and plan to get the same for DD for my SUV. In DH's truck we have the Cosco Scenera. It's safety rating is second only to Britax (or was last time I checked) and it's only $45 at Wal-mart. It doesn't have a lot of padding or anything but it's good enough for the limited amount of time the kids spend in DH's vehicle.

I'm in denial about switching DD over to a convertible seat. She only weighs 16 lbs though and is about 29 inches tall so we are still fine in our Chicco key fit.
