If you had a scheduled c-section...

when did your milk come in?

I went into labor naturally w/ DD and ended up w/ an unplanned c-section.  This time my dr. is strongly encouraging me to have a scheduled c-section b/c of the complications that led to my first c-section.  I just learned from an acquaintance though that it's not uncommon for your milk to take a really long time (like 2 weeks) to come in if the baby is taken before you are able to go into labor naturally.  This freaked me out - and I'm wondering if this has been the case w/ any of you ladies?  I'm going to ask my Dr about it at our next appointment too, but I'd love to hear your feedback.

W/ DD, my milk came in on day 4 in the hospital - not sure if that's early or late in the grand scheme of things. But until then, I  was nursing DD successfully w/ lots of colostrum.

TIA!

  • my BFF had a schedule c-section, and her milk came in at a normal time - like 2 or 3 days later.

  • A co-worker told me that her baby was born via c-section at 7 months due to some complications.  She said that the hospital used an industrial grade pump on her right away so that he'd have the nutrients to help him grow.  She said that she produced like a cow almost immediately and for over a year.  She attributed it to the heavy duty pump.  It might be something worth asking about if you're concerned.

  • Not long - I think around day 3 with DS and day 4 with DD?

  • I had a scheduled c/s with #2 at 39 weeks and my milk came in on day 2. It was also day 2 with #1, but that was at 41 weeks and a c/s after induction.
  • We had some issues with him latching in the beginning and they had me hooked up to a pump by day 2 and my milk came in the second night!  I had a semi-overproducing problem in the beginning because of it, but it was better that than not enough in my opinion.  It evened out after 6 weeks or so and we are still going strong 10.5 months later...
  • I think it was day three for me. I think it probably just varies from mom to mom and how well baby is latching. good luck =)

  • 3 scheduled c-sections, milk always came in around day 3
  • It's actually not labor that signals your milk to come in, but the removal of the placenta from the uterus. Based on your previous experience and others comments about their multiple delivery experiences (being consistently similar), I'd expect you to have a similar timeline as you did with your daughter.

Having lots of skin to skin time and putting baby to the breast very frequently will help stimulate your milk to come in as well.

    I wouldn't worry. I'm sure you'll do great!

This.  I was starting to produce by the third day.

  • Just wanted to add that my milk came in faster after my scheduled c-sec then when I labored and then had a c-sec.  I think since there was less stress on my body it was more easily able to produce the milk.
