Pack and Play Question...

I feel so dumb...

So we're using the Pack and Play for the baby to sleep in while he's in our room the first couple weeks. I haven't really gotten a chance to play with it too much since right after we got it DH shoved it in the back of the baby's closet along with everything else so he could paint and whatnot. But I do remember when we first got it him and his dad set it up so we could see it and there is like a canopy that comes across it about half way up that according to my SIL is apparently is where the baby sleeps (I'm guessing so you don't have to reach all the way down into the bottom to get to the baby...). Does anyone else's PnP have this? I don't remember seeing anything about it when I was shopping around and FIL ended up getting us a nicer one than we registered for anyway.

Also the super dumb question, do you need to put a mattress in the PnP? I tried to ask Babies R Us when I was shopping around but they seem to have a difficult time understanding questions...they told me I CAN use a mattress but it's sold separately. Ya...obviously I CAN use one but do I NEED one? I feel like when I just put the baby in there when he's older I won't really need one, but I'm nervous about needing one for a newborn.

Thoughts? Anyone?

Re: Pack and Play Question...

  • The canopy that you are talking about sounds like the bassinet, which will be very nice to have if you are planning on using it for baby the first few weeks. PNP normally come with a thin/foldable mattress that fits in the bottom and in the bassinet. There are better quality mattresses that you can buy made for the PNP (also sheets that fit them). But this is up to you whether you want to use them or not. I personally am not buying an extra mattress, but I am not using planning on using it all the time.

    Hope this helps.

  • A lot of PnPs have a bassinet feature which is basically an elevated support for the mattress that comes with the PnP.  Ours has a newborn napper too, but I am not getting an additional mattress for the PnP.  You should get it out and learn how to set it up though--its super easy and they fold down compact so even if you don't want to keep it up yet at least you will know what you are doing and if you want anything else for it... like PnP sheets.
  • Ditto the other posters. It sounds like you're talking about the bassinet, which will really come in handy during those first few weeks they are in your bedroom.

We are not buying an extra mattress, but we did buy PnP sheets.

  • our PnP has the changer and a rocker on the top so you don't have to reach all the way down. Ours also has holders for diapers, wipes and such... I bought 2 extra PnP sheets for ours. I figured when she's in it she will need something to lie on. We have the Graco Capri Pack n Play.
  • Haha I was like scared to open this back up in case you were all like "You're obv too dumb to have a baby!"

I'm going to make DH drag it out of the back of the closet tonight so I can se tit up and play with it.

    Thanks for the help <3

  • We'll be using the pack n play with the bassinet level thing too and I can't for the life of me figure how to set it up. We got the pack n play all up but the other part is weird... then there's the changing table accessory thing- all confusing.

  • That feature is called the bassinet and you put the baby in it when they are less than fifteen pounds. You should not use a mattress with it.  THe pack nplay should be firm and you should not have anything at all in it so you prevent SIDS.  The pack Nplay bassinet would also not be able to support a crib mattress.
  • We have the PNP with a bassinet and separate changer.  I bought a velour sheet for it but that's it.
