Breastfeeding

also, a caffeine question.

I am wondering what your experiences with caffeine and  BFing have been. I know that its supposed to be okay to have some, but I am worried that it will be bad for DS's sleep schedule. Has anyone had problems with this? I did drink some caffeine during pregnancy, I just cut back a bit. Any ideas or words of wisdom would be helpful, these headaches are really getting to me...

Re: also, a caffeine question.

  • I am a coffee lover... I was afraid like you to drink caffeine... but after 2 weeks I wanted a hot coffee sooo bad so  I  drank one.. watched my baby and saw no difference, I have since then drank about 2 cups of coffee every day.. no problem with my daughter ever.

It helps to remember your breast-milk metabolizes thing like this out of your milk so if your worried drink the caffeine right as baby is nursing then you may get a couple hours for your 'peak' to come down in your milk and baby won't be as exposed.

"There is no evidence that caffeine decreases milk supply.

The myth that caffeine will decrease milk supply is widespread. Many moms consume caffeine, and it ought to be easy to document any adverse effects of caffeine on milk supply. No such effect has been observed, however, despite a number of studies of caffeine intake in breastfeeding mothers and years of clinical observations. In fact, one study (Nehlig & Debry, 1994) indicates that caffeine can stimulate milk production. A baby who is fussy and jittery from caffeine stimulation may not nurse well, however, which could lead to a decreased milk supply over time (due to decreased nursing, rather than the mother's caffeine intake). "

What makes you think you are "just barely making enough" as far as nursing goes usually your body does make the exact amount baby needs, pumping isn't an indication of this...

  • Thanks for the info, I think I just needed someone to tell me it was okay, and that I wouldn't be up ALL night with a caffeinated week old baby!

  • I've never quit my coffee. I had 1 cup/day while pg and have 2-3 now. It has not been a problem.

Pumping 2 oz with a 4 week old is NOT low supply. It's normal. So so so normal. Read the kellymom stuff and stop stressing. Smile Ideally with a cup of coffee to enjoy.

  • I drink coffee all the time and have since DD was a baby.  I did with DS, too.  It didn't seem to affect either one of them.  Some babies are more sensitive, but you'll probably be fine.

Well, it was because of only pumping 2 ounces in the morning (when I see others posting that they get 4 to 6 ounces).

    Thanks for the link!

I have an ample supply and would have been damn lucky to get 2 oz at 4 weeks. That's great! Now I get 4-6 oz, but I don't think that started until 3 months or so.

If you're really worried, you could always go to an LC for a weighed feeding. Those always made me fee; better :) But, honestly, if LO has enough wet/dirty diapers and is growing on track, you're doing just fine!

Re: caffeine- I drink a soda a day, just like when I was pregnant, and it's been fine. Sometimes I indulge in a chai and there's no difference with LO.
