Nurses and medical folks -- should I freak out? Warning -- contains crazy

So I swear I'm not a hypochondriac.  I don't even have a PCP; just my OB-GYN, because I never go to the doctor for anything.  But last Saturday I woke up with weird soreness in my right hand.  The soreness is not very intense, and it's not even really soreness -- the best I can do to describe it is that it's similar to the way my skin feels when I have aches and a fever -- like my nerve endings feel things more acutely -- but it was localized to just my hand.

Yesterday, the feeling moved up to my forearm.  It didn't spread; it moved, in that my hand no longer had the feeling.  And today, it has moved to the back of my arm above my elbow, and was gone from my forearm.

As I said above, the pain is not bad at all; it's really just a weird sort of enhanced sensitivity to the touch.  But the fact that it is moving upwards has me a little freaked out that it's a blood clot, although I don't have any of the other symptoms Dr. Google lists for thrombosis.  I feel silly asking this for what essentially boils down to a mild soreness in my arm, but blood clots freak me out, in a one-minute-you're-fine,-the-next,-you're-dead kind of way.

What do you guys think?  Have you ever heard of a traveling nerve soreness like this?  Should I just wait and see?  Go to a walk-in clinic tomorrow if it's still there?  Or just see if it gets worse?

Thanks for indulging my crazy!

  • you're not crazy.

Sounds just like some type of "carpal tunnel" stuff to me. I get it when I am working on my computer a lot (and not paying attention to my posture, etc) typing a ton, and had a HORRIBLE case of it post-birth with Ava. Sounds JUST like you describe. (and FWIW, not like a clot would be at all. AT ALL)

My right arms feels like someone ran it over right now. (lots of computer work/editing lately) and I told Davez I was having a silent MI. He laughed, and said it was the wrong arm.

So yeah, I get cha. See if OTC stuff helps (Aleve, ty, advil... but take it as directed for 1-2 days straight) and even put the arm on "rest" status if you can.  If you notice a rash, hot spots or anything really odd... put a call in. But I'm stamping "acute arm pain/carpal tunnel/neuropathy NOS" on your chart; ;-)

  • i think if you never worry about medical stuff but are worried about this, it is worth going to a doctor.  it is better to know that you are fine than to worry that you're not.

come back and let us know that everything is all right!

Hmm, I like this, and I'm going with it.  Thanks Davez (and Becca too)!

  • funny- i'm going through the same thing... started yesterday - my arm was killing me at church holding Grayson... and then it just hurt badly all day long. It was our first really cold day of the season so i figured it was just arthritis.

i took 4 advil and it didn't really help much... so before bed i took a percocet and that helped enough that i could sleep.

today it's been killing me again all day - but more focused on my wrist. I have had carpal tunnel issues in the past (many years ago) so i figured it was that coming back.  DH brought me some icy hot patches and having one wrapped around my wrist helped a LOT.

right now i've got icy hot lotion on my arm and it's helping... and low and behold- my right wrist is starting to hurt now.

I did google "symptoms of heart attack" and "blood clot" today b/c i was worried, too - mostly b/c i was totally exhausted today for no real reason... if i feel that way tomorrow i'm going to call the doc- but otherwise I think it's just carpal tunnel and the weather.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • Hmmm I have something similar. We call it "spot of the day" because it's in a different spot each day. I'll have a patch on my arm, shoulder, back or neck that is very sensitive to touch. It's never the same place two days in a row but it's really annoying. I have no idea what it is. We kind of looked at symptoms of fibromyalgia but I'm not sure it's that bad either.

  • I had three blood clots in my arm, and it doesn't sound like a blood clot. But if you are kinda freaked out, go to the doctor. I would. I go to the doctor for everything though. But hey, once I went and I had a bunch of blood clots!?
